Organic food is not necessarily more expensive.
It IS more expensive if you buy it from a supermarket because they price it higher to differentiate it from thier base products.
If you buy organic from a farm shop its no more expensive than the ordinary stuff from sainsbury's. People jsut assume supermarkets are cheaper and have forgotten how to shop locally.
EG. the eggs from our door are 90p a half dozen. Sure thats dearer than the cheapest in Sainsbury's but is it really that expensive when you can actually see the source ? You know the chickens are totally organic and freerange. whereas the sainsbury's free range are mearly caged birds that are outside.
And you will find genuinely organic freerange eggs taste totally different. We wouldn't have weekly customers from 10 miles away if there was no difference. I wouldn't advocate travelling that far for eggs but it sdoes show there is a real difference.
We have so many customers who say "how do you get them to taste so good". We don't, it just happens because are eggs are produced the same as they would ahve been 50 years ago. People have just forgotten what real food tasts like.
Organic fruit is better in that they tend to be the older varieties which have more taste and are resistance to natural bugs and desease. Modern strains of fruit are developed for high speed growning and strong skins so they don't absorb the chemicals. Little is given to the development of taste.
Go for old varieties, organic if you like, and its a world apart from supermarket regular stuff and thier version of organic.

I thought about going all organic but after much reading I learned that the foods labeled as organic are only as organic as the seller is honest. For example... If someone is raising organic chickens but sneaks in inappropriate food they can lie and say it's organic.
What I've done instead is to buy from local growers during the farm market season. I don't look for organic but figure it's at least healthier than the food in the markets that has been sitting long enough for the food value to deteriorate.

Organic or not? good question, I went to an organic farm recently, approved by the "soil association" but the meat could not be labelled organic purely because the organic abettor was over 200 miles away - so the farm didn't approve of transporting the livestock that distance because of the stress to the animals so they had them locally slaughtered, resulting in a non-organic label.
I personally purchase local food from the farm shops which supports the community and is probably the next best thing to organic.

Be careful about organic food. I had an uncle who wouldn't eat vegetables which were shop bought. He grew his own, used only natural fertiliser and refused to use pesticides or insecticides. He died in the early 70s. The only person in the family to die of cancer! No wonder I'm not convinced.

i hear you...it's true...it's just a matter of what's a priority and what are you willing to spend on. Even when i was flat broke, i always bought organic produce. another thing to consider is where something is grown. it may not be organic, but if it's local, that's something to consider. think about all the gasoline (carbon) and resources that are used to transport an organic banana from south america. so, eating seasonal local food is also something to consider when making food choices.
organic food is great for the environment in so many ways. if you go to local farmers markets, you can cut the middle man out and usually pay less for organic produce.

Well, they are expensive, but thats only becuase so little people ever buy it.
If more ppl are willing to spend a bit more, maybe organise their money a little bit better, pretty soon the organic food wont have to be so expensive and every one will be able to afford it.

The advantage to organic is that the preservatives, chemical-based fertilizers, artificial growth processes, pesticides, and other chemicals are largely absent. This is healthier. Because these chemicals aren't used, the shortcuts they provide aren't available. So costs to raise/produce organic go up, and these costs must be paid for by the consumer.

I think it is worth it because they don't use the hormones, pesticides, etc. At my house we get only organic when it is possible.
