Not all vegetarians are vegetarian for morality issues, you must understand that.

I am vegan for 3 reasons: animals (morality), environment, and health.

I do not feel guilty because I didn't understand these issues back then. I was only 12 when I cut out meat...even then I hadn't grasped the entire concept.

I don't think guilty is the word for it. I kind of regret that my parents were not more enlightened about animal welfare and that it would have rubbed off on me sooner. My mum was almost a classic hippy during the 70s when I was little (long hair, yoga, kaftan!) - but not vegetarian unfortunately. Obviously at the time, I didn't know any different and I ate what I was given (though my mum knew better than to be honest with me about what veal is, and got away with telling me it was some kind of beef for ages until I found out the truth!)
As said before, there is no point feeling guilty about something you had no control over at the time, and which you didn't know any different. But yes, having now been veggie for nearly 19 years, I sincerely wish that I had been veggie from birth and therefore not responsible for the deaths of any animals.

My parents never made me eat meat. My dad who was a big meat eater used to make different meals for me. He was very nice about it. I have been a vegetarian since I was about 5. I became one on my own. I did eat meat before that. But I don't feel guilty or angry. You know, it's just a lifestyle choice. Everyone in my family eats meat and I respect that. I am not a vegetarian out of guilt. I just can't bear putting flesh into my mouth. It's simple as that really.

I am a former chef in Canada and when we were younger in the 1960's & 70's, the movement towards healthier eating and moral issues of being a vegetarian or vegan were not as prevelent, and most of us as children had an averstion to eating our vegetables.

I have been an off and on vegetarian, like the one respondant it has been a health issue, I am diabetic and have had a weight issue over the years. And I have had to limit my carnivorical intake, I have found grains, tofu and soya bean products and a variety of fresh and frozen vegetables to be a great alternative and quite filling.

The issues of morality and concern of the animal kingdom were not something as stated we had much control over, as our mothers not only prepared, but bought the food, "I was told to eat what was put in front of you", that may be why I am 6'4" and 300 lbs.

I can't speak for every other vegetarian out there, but I can say that for me personally ... the past is the past I the fact that I ate meat when I was young doesn't mean anything. Becoming vegetarian, for most, is a conscious choice and only what you do from here on out is what matters.

Of course not; my mom did what she felt was best when she raised me. She also worked very hard to make sure I had food to eat.

When I became an adult, I made my own decisions, and my mom has respected my beliefs and has put in extra effort to make sure I had vegetarian foods to eat at family events even though I never asked her to.

If I become a parent, I will do what I think is best for my kids.

No, you dont just wake up and decide to go vegitarian. It takes time to figure out who you are and then give up meat

Yes we most certainly do. We also feel guilty about stealing the neighbors poodle and shooting it out of a cannon.
