When you exercise your heart it gets bigger and stronger, just like the rest of the muscles in your body. The bigger and stronger the more effecient it pumps blood. Therefore when the extra is needed such in a race or other athletic event the heart can deal better with it. At rest athletes have low heart rates.

m girly girl athletes dont train to have a higher heart rate than others .the fact is that maximal heart rate in trained athlete and normal nontrained individual during exercise is the same . and normal resting heart rate of an athlete is less than others coz under resting condition the athelete heart beats less and more effectively.they train to have a better cardiac output.
