Only 1/4 of people with Genital herpes will experience a severe initial outbreak. The first symptoms usually appear within 21 days. You will notice 'flu-like' symptoms (fever, general malaise) Symptoms that may appear later on are: sores around the genitals and pain when urinating. With medication these can clear up in 5 days. But can last longer.

Some people get mild symptoms (some so mild that they never think anything of it)

And most people don't even realise they have it.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

If you catch genital herpes, your chances of showing initial symptoms are pretty good. The first symptoms are usually somewhat 'flu' like. The bad thing about herpes is the fact that more than 30 percent of people who have herpes don't know it...and don't show recurring symptoms. As for who you caught it from...if you really want to know, ask people with whom you've been intimate. Good luck. Check this site..it has some good info. on herpes and symptoms. http://www.herpes.com/Symptoms.shtml

Sometimes it only takes a few days to show up but also sometimes you won't have an outbreak.
