They aren't suspicious. They are terrified. They scream. They cry. Men use electric prods to force them where they do not want to go.
I have a photo of a pig in line for slaughter. He was so terrified by the screams of the pigs in front of him he vomited and passed out.
At Pig's Peace farm sanctuary they have a pig who watched her whole herd be slaughtered. At the sight of any human being she would begin screaming and trying to hide. It took a very long time for her to learn she was safe and that people were ok.
I've seen a horse cry.
They know. They love life just like we do. They love their families just like we do.

That's a good question you asked! I really believe that those poor animals are suspicious as they have emotions, and an ability to sense more than us. I feel so bad thinking about this however, it's reality and yes I certainly think they know something horrible is about to happen. I would like to think that slaughtering is done in a humane manner but I don't believe so. Remember when all that exposure about the "chickens" being treated cruelly was on the the news. That alone leads me to believe that slaughtering humanely is a thing of the past. What we can do is keep actively involved in the humane treatment of all animals and donate to these charities if we can afford to do so. Let's just hope that in the future new laws passed will be enforced.for the humane treatment of all animals including farm animals.

I don't know, because I am not an animal. But what I do know is that some animals are smarter than us, and possibly would be suspicious. But I hope they're not too scared...it's such a horrible ordeal for them. That's why I became vegetarian.

Of course. Haven't you see animals being led to slaughter on TV? I have. They freak out. First of all, they can already hear the screams and smell the blood and death of the ones ahead of them. The pigs scream their heads off... I've see dogs being led to slaughter and they are whimpering, scraping, scratching and trying to hold onto something just as any human would too as the person drags them to the slaughter room. There’s even an episode of Nature of Things which talks about a woman who is a specialist in designing slaughter house ramps etc. to find ways of finessing them up the ramps instead of pulling or pushing or prodding them, because of course they do not want to go. Was a show about colour-blindness, actually.
Speaking of dogs, people around here [N. America] think the killing and eating of any animal they are familiar with (pets) is wrong; I think that's seriously hypocritical. I guess it’s the old Charlotte’s Web story. Once you get to know someone, then suddenly you care. Someone dies who you don’t know; then you won’t care. Get to know that person’s story intimately; then suddenly you care. Human nature I suppose.

as badly as they are treated up until the time they go, I would imagine they look forward to getting it over with.....shocking! I dont eat meat. I was at a slaughterhouse once selling insurance. The look of terror in those gentle creatures eyes was horrifying. I havent eat mean or poultry since........

Mostly, yes - especially when they see others going to the knife.
Don;t forget, most slaughterhouse workers are violent morons who make no attempts to shelter the animals fromwhat's going on - despite flimsy legal safeguards. There are alarming numbers of them who end up as serial killers, such as Fred West, Peter Sutcliffe and various other killers. They do the job because it gives them a taste of their future vocation. Their behaviour towards the animals certainly doesn't engender trust and comfort!
The fact you even need to ask suggests you care about animals, so if you haven;t already, why not give up meat?

I really don't know the answer, seeing as how I can't read minds.
However, your Question reminds me of a joke:
A guy goes to a restaurant. He asks the waiter, "How do you prepare your chickens here?"
The waiter says, "We just tell them straight out: you're going to die."
