I would think that is an entirely possible but very rare occurence. Take for instance an old married couple of 50 years. When one dies it has been known that the other will follow shortly thereafter. I think it depends on the level of sadness and what happened to break the heart. Obviously you are feeling pretty down right now but if you have enough in you to type this question, I think your safe.

Broken-heart syndrome' has medical link
By Kathleen Fackelmann, USA TODAY
A sudden shock, such as hearing news of a death in the family, can trigger a condition that appears to be a massive heart attack except that the victim suffers no lasting damage, a study reports today.

The condition, which researchers have dubbed the "broken-heart syndrome," mimics a heart attack, leading doctors to believe the heart has suffered severe damage.

But instead, the heart is temporarily stunned, Johns Hopkins cardiologist Ilan Wittstein says. "Massive heart attacks don't get better within a matter of days," he says.

Japanese doctors described the syndrome in the 1990s, but today's report in The New England Journal of Medicine is the first to identify the condition in the USA.

Folklore long has held that traumatic events are capable of triggering an apparent heart attack, and today's study solidifies the link between the emotions and the heart, says Sidney Smith, a cardiologist at the University of North Carolina and a spokesman for the American Heart Association.

"This is real, and it's important to recognize," Smith says.

Although no one has counted cases, Smith says broken-heart syndrome, which often is misdiagnosed as a heart attack, ultimately will account for a fraction of the 7 million heart attacks that occur in the USA each year.

Wittstein stumbled upon the syndrome after seeing a patient who had experienced what was described as a massive heart attack after learning of her mother's death. Within a short time, the Hopkins doctors were treating two more patients who had suffered an emotional shock and were displaying heart attack symptoms.

The team collected 19 cases for the study; most were middle-aged or older women.

Doctors soon ruled out a heart attack, which occurs when a blockage, often a blood clot, interrupts blood flowing to the heart. Tests found no sign of a blood clot or blockage, and no evidence suggested that the heart tissue had been irreversibly damaged, Wittstein says.

Two weeks later, patients' heart functions returned to normal, which is almost unheard of when someone has had a major heart attack.

Soon after the event occurred, the doctors measured very high blood levels of catecholamines, which are stress hormones released after an emotional trauma. Subjects had catecholamine levels about 30 times higher than normal.

The surge of stress hormones overwhelms the heart, leaving the powerhouse unable to pump effectively, Wittstein says. After the shock subsides, the level of stress hormones drops, and the heart's pumping power returns.

The study raises some important questions, such as why women seem more vulnerable to broken-heart syndrome than men, Smith says, and whether people who have had one attack are prone to another.

"This paper points to a need for more research," he says.

Yes you can. Even though you said its not from a boy, there are proven cases in old married couples that when one of the spouse dies the other does not live much longer. But if your heart is too sad it can cause your body to give up the will to live causing your brain to shut down your bodily functions.

there are many ways your heart can be broken and i do believe that when your heart is grieved it will start bringing on medical problems that normally wouldn't exist. i have witness this from my grandmother she lost my mother and they we really close she depended on her and when she got killed in a wreck. my grans health went south started with heart failures and attacks then she passed due to all the other things that came into play so i say yes you can die due to a broken heart. but jesus can heal all matters of broken hearts!!!

I have heard this term many times but never experienced it myself. But I did witness a neighbor of mine in good health die this way. Her daughter placed her from her comfortable Apartment into assistance living and she died before she could ever unpack. Her spirit was broken. She always dressed nice, nails, hair and clothes perfect, drove herself everywhere in her caddy and enjoyed life. She did not want to move, but had no say. Her daughter wanted to travel with her new husband and my little neighbor was in the way.
