Take Robitussin or Nyquil right before you go to bed. Also, it usually helps me to sleep with my head elevated more than usual, because the coughing is worse when I lie flat on my back. Try propping up your pillow or using more than one pillow and sleeping in a position halfway between lying flat and sitting up.

I have that problem from time to time and I cough so much my ribs hurt. I find that I can only sleep sitting up. If you have a lounger of some type, try sleeping in it or prop yourself up with every pillow possible. It helps. . .Also as nasty as it sounds-when you cough something up-spit it out. . .do not swallow. Try to get your sinuses drained before you go to bed-hot shower and spit, nasal spray and spit, or here it is so humid you can just walk outside. . .yes and spit. When I lived further north and much less humid I used a vaporizer (Vick's is good stuff). You can also put a dab around your nose and is will keep you open enough to go to sleep. And then there's those sticks of stuff you stick up your nose. They work for a short time. With all of these you can switch around and usually get thru the night and the mentholyptus (spelling?) cough drops by day. Hope you feel better.

I have had a bothersome hacking cough that disturbs my sleep since the holidays. I have been to the doctor 3 times. I have had 3 shots and 2 different antibiotics and 2 kinds of cough med. I was diagnosed with pneumonia. I still can't get rid of this cough and throwing up. I take Codeine Cough med at night and still cough.
I would suggest that you go to the doctor. You could have pneumonia, bronchitis or upper respiratory infection.

You defiantly need to go see your doctor! You didn’t mention about your cough pattern, is it at night only or through out the day; how long have you had it for; do you cough up anything? These questions that I have asked are common to access your status. You need to go see a doctor soon as possible, because if you linger this on it will only get worse. If you have been trying to sleep with this cough and haven't been able to archive any relief you need your throat checked. So go see a Doctor ASAP!

Nyquil and get a humidifier. Only take the recommended dose of Nyquil and read all the safety information before taking. If you have post-nasal drip, it sometimes is easier to sleep on your stomach.

Stop all dairy except for plain yoghurt...if you don't like the taste of yoghurt, get the fruity kind that has the good bacteria.

You need to familiarize yourself with the wonderful world of garlic. It acts like Penicilin, only it doesn't kill the good bacteria. I haven't been sick in years with anything! I never get the flu and I never need a flu shot.

Good luck.
