vegans, its imperative that you simply become the vegetarian that you started out to be. the demand for meat will never ever go away. stop trying to keep this little "crusade" of your's going because the world will NOT stop eating meat. its fine by me if you dont have it in you to kill animals for your food. you eat what you like and dont eat what you dont like. give up, you lost the "war" before you fired the first shot. go on with your lives and peacefully eat whatever makes you happy.

I think most vegans believe that they are saving animals lives because they choose not to become part of something that they see not to be fit or morally wrong. I think that vegans know that the meateaters outweigh them statistically, but that certainly does not stop anyone from standing up for what they believe in. When you believe in something stand up for it even if you are the only one standing. Thanks just wanted to share my opinion.

Here's some interesting numbers I found. In a lifetime the average Swiss eats 8 cows, 33 pigs, 720 chickens, 6 sheep, 2 goats, 25 rabbits, 4 deer, and 390 fish. That's an awful lot of preventable carnage.

maybe it's like the supply and demand thing?? if the demand goes down, the supply may as well??
most vegans are against the conditions the animals are born /raised and then slaughtered in..the impact to the animal and the impact on the environment...
maybe you should check out the book 'the ethics of what we eat' by peter singer.. maybe you'll be a little more understanding to the vegan cause..
ps: i am not a vegan..

saving animals NO just saving ourselves. Most Vegans or Vegetarians also eat organic. So we are saying no to pesticides, herbesides, GMO's, chemicals, force feeding, hormones, addictives, perservatives. Extra packaging, unrecyclable waste, unrenewable resources,
We vegetarians and vegans also suffer NO cravings for salt, sugar, fat, additives, food coloring ect. infact we often suffer absolutily no addictions at all. Most of us will live a long time and never go to the hospital so we don't need conventional doctors or massive drug companies filling us with perscriptions.
Oh yes, one more thing we consume less energy, we have less waste, and we feel good about living because we are actively participating towards a wonderful peaceful future.
You chew on your onsale at Walmart and I will crunch my organic grown on a local farm carrot. My reward is so much more.

Makes sense. I'm not saving animals' lives by being vegan, therefore I shouldn't be a vegan.
And I was getting so excited about our crusade, too :(

Uhhh; maybe because all vegheads save animals lives. Do just a little research at the USDA or UN websites (Hint: look at the data in the just released UN report on global climate). Using the available data we see that roughly 10,000,000,000 animals are killed for food each year in the US (that's 10 billion if you're mathematically challenged). Using a rough figure of 250,000,000 US residents that would give us a rough estimate of 40 animals killed to feed each American. However 5% of the US population are veggie (12,500,000 residents). Remove them from the calculation and you now have a rough average of 42 animals killed per American. That indicates that on rough average veggie Americans are saving the lives of over 525,000,000 animals a year since we don't consume animals!
In actual point of fact the demand for animal based foods has been dropping on a per capita basis for over 20 years! I live in cattle country and have family and friends that own ranches, dairy's and poultry operations. Ask them about the demand and price they receive for their products! They will tell you demand is down and dropping. More folks are paying attention to just how harmful animal husbandry is to their health and the environment and are reducing their consumption of animal based foods. If the 'mainstream' mass media told the whole story of prion disease cattle consumption would drop as dramatically as it did in the UK. In North America at best 1 out of 200,000 cattle are tested for this disease and it is *illegal* for a rancher to voluntarily test his animals. Prion disease is also rapidly spreading through wildlife ruminates (so much for hunters brains). Canada admitted last week they *found* one more infected animal. How many infected animals got eaten that they missed? Have you noticed what's happened to poultry consumption in the UK lately? Dropped dramatically after their scandal regarding bird flu! Yes, it's safe to eat *if* properly cooked but what about all the virus that is spread before cooking? You know, during transport from farm to market to home to cutting board to cooking utensil? And if it isn't cooked just right...Oops!
Get the picture Birdbrain? We *are* saving animals lives and demand for animals *is* dropping! As a birdbrain I hope you've received your vaccine to prevent H5N1 bird flu. Oh wait, there isn't one. Sorry about that.

A couple of my friends were talking. Friend number one says to friend number 2 who was a vegan, "What about the soy beans!?!?" Friend number 2 says, "What about them!?!?" Later friend number 2 looks up soy bean harvesting and reads that the harvesting of soy beans causes thousands of organisms to lose their homes or be killed every year. Friend number 2 is no longer a vegan.
