Correct me if I am misinterpreting your question - 1/10 mile uphill plus 1/2 mile downhill?

I believe that would be 1/10mile + 5/10mile
= 6/10 (also equals 3/5, or 60%) of a mile.

= 965.6064 meters;
or 3168 feet;
or 1 056 yards.

If you wanted to calculate the horizontal distance between start and finish, we'd need more info about the slopes/angles/measurements of the hill.

...ummmm.... which category are we in? .... although I suppose walking up and down hills is good for the heart...

According to what orientation? In terms of pure walking distance, the answer is 3/5 of a mile. But in terms of geographic distance, it would be less.
