The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is a virus of the herpes family (which includes Herpes simplex virus), and is one of the most common viruses in humans.

You CAN have the virus without having infectious mononucleosis (aka "Mono") or an STD, but EBV commonly causes mono.

It also causes many other diseases including:
Stevens-Johnson syndrome
Hepatitis
Herpes
Multiple Sclerosis
Hodgkin's disease

Almost everyone is exposed to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by the time they reach adulthood. Infection early in childhood is common and usually does not cause severe illness, but infection that occurs in adolescence often leads to mononucleosis. When they test for mono there are two tests one that looks for the EBV and one that looks to see if you have a current mono infection.

epstein barr is mono, which can stay in your system for a long period of time, so you can have it without having any symptoms. when it's in the acute stage that is when you get the symptoms of sorethroat and fatigue.
