My blood pressure has fluctuated from a high of 148/80 to a low of 83/48 in a matter of a couple of hours

It depends on how you feel. If you're dizzy, short of breathe, have chest pain, then it's a significant thing. Some people can function just fine with lower pressures. But, some can be dehydrated, their pressure can go low when they stand up, an hour or so after certain medicines their pressure can go low. So, sounds like you're concerned,but if you don't have any other symptoms maybe you should recheck it. And keep your arm at your hearts level, cause having it too low or too high can change the readings. Take it in the same arm too.

Dodgy machine perhaps? Your blood pressure can vary throughout the day, dropping to lows when you're relaxed and lying down. If you're experiencing dizzy spells these can be caused by drops in blood pressure, but if you dont get any symptoms i wouldnt worry too much.
