I tried some recently (smoothy) and my throat became scratchy and itchy and I felt like there was something there... Could it be an allergic reaction? I usually eat oranges and have no reaction but not the one on my tree.

It tastes fine and seems healthy enough. It wasn't processed and hasn't been sprayed with any kind of chemical, we usually just let the tree sit there in the yard all year and I just wanted to try out the oranges today.

You're having a slight reaction to the natural oils present in the rind! It's not as noticeable in store bought citrus since those are 'stale'. It's not normally a big deal but if it really bothers you try washing them first with some dishwashing liquid to cut some of the oil out of the skin (and I know I'll get dissed for suggesting it but it works).

Who would of thought?
We bought a house in Orlando,Florida. Forever summer, orange trees in our back yard. Great we thought, lets have some fresh orange juice every day, every morning. Oh and lets not forget our friends, will give them as many oranges that they can carry.
So the juicing starts. What a great taste the orange juice had.
I got sick that same day, my dad the next day ,and my husband the champ stood strong till the third day. Only to end up the sickest with a high fever that lasted 2 days and other problems i should avoid talking about. Our friends that got the oranges as gifts reported the same mysterious illness.
So I went to my neighbors and asked ,if they know.
They told me that the same happened to them and that they got the trees cut. They are not sure why ,but their theory is that our septic tanks are feeding our trees.
So sadly we are buying our oranges once again.
Hope this will reinforce your instinct. I wish I had one like that.

The only thing I can share here is, we eat a lot of oranges that are brought to us from friends who have orange trees. I've never had a reaction like that but everyone is different. Good luck!

Normally there shouldn't be a problem... Is it possible that any pesticides or herbicides got onto the fruit? that would effect the taste...try one more this year and if that one tastes bad too dont eat any more until next year...and make sure no chemicals are used.

hope this helps
