Lately I've been going through kind of a fake meat phase. I've had some awesome "sausage" and "bacon" but I can't find the perfect burger.

Commercial brands don't really cut it. They just don't taste right.

My local health food store has fresh-made tofu almond patties that are pretty good, but they're not really much like actual burgers.

I went to a natural foods-type cafe a few nights ago and had a burger made of TVP, and it tasted just like the low-quality stuff I had in the school cafeteria in elementary school except it was a lot drier.

How can I acquire the ultimate vegan burger? You can give me a recipe or you can recommend a brand.

And please, anyone even considering telling me to eat a real hamburger, just go away.

The Yves Cuisine vegan burgers have been rated very highly in taste tests done with meat eaters. They must be pretty close to real because I can't stand them and when I'm making analogs for meat eaters I know I'm close to 'right' when I hate what I've made.

Actually I have found the type that combine nuts, legumes and tofu are tastiest, just find a basic recipe and play with it for the right texture and taste.
Here is a good recipe to start with, try adjusting the spice to suit your taste.

Tofu Nut Burger

2 ounces firm tofu, mashed
1 tablespoon almond butter (or other nut butter)
1 diced dates
3-5 diced raisins
1 dash turmeric
3/4 teaspoon white miso
1 drop honey or maple syrup or molasses
1 1/2-2 tablespoons flour
canola oil
Mix all ingredients but the canola oil until mixture has a thick, creamy consistency.
With a bit of canola oil, fry mixture on each side until slightly dark and crispy, flattening it as you cook to a round patty shape.
Serve warm with honey mustard on wheat bread.

This is is bit *hearty*... but darn good if you that
close-to-burger-ness

Ives fake ground (found near produce in the refrigerated area)
Some flour or corn starch to make it stick to itself
add some nutritional yeast

*make patties*

fry in a lightly oiled pan

add pepper, garlic salt, onion powder
fry some sliced onions on the side

lightly toast yourself a vegan bun

put some veganayse on one side
some bbq sauce on the other
if you like, some tofutti cheese
lettuce and tomato
... if you like spice, add a couple of jalapenos.

We made it up.

They sometimes call the portabello mushroom "the vegetarian's hamburger". Look for the big ones in your produce dept. Discard the stem and wipe them clean with a damp cloth. Brush them with olive oil and grill them like you would a regular burger (probably won't take as long tho). They tend to have a sort of meaty flavor. Place on your favorite bun and add your favorite toppings. Bon appetit!

PS Check also check out the produce dept. for more meat substitutes (near the tofu).

If you're telling that you should have a vegan "hamburger", then make a patty of your own. But if you want ,then, I'll tell you.

1 cup of tomatoes no seeds
1cup of onions finely chopped and have juice.
1 cup of cornstarch
2cups of cabbages (red and green) finely chopped
1/2 cup of olive oil
1 tsp. of garlic crushed and chopped nicely
2 cups of salt and pepper
1 piece of bread soaked and drained
2 pieces of tofu finely mashed like baby food

1. Put put all the ingedients. Mix them all well.
2.Put the mixture into the refrigirator for 2 hours and add some pepper again, thaw and mix.
3. if it is creamy and like the patty from a hamburger , form it at a shape of a patty and it is done.
4. All you need is cheese, pickles and lettuce and done.

I like Walking on Sunshire's recipe, but one thing, after smashed the firm tofu, use a cheese cloth (a little mesh bag), to squeeze some of the water from the tofu, therefore it will corporate better with the rest of the ingredient, if you eat cheese, a little cream cheese will make everything stick together better.
Note: In a few day I will post some recipe on my Yahoo360.
