Being a vegetarian has a lot of benefits that I could go on all day about, but since you only asked for five, here are the top five...
1. Animal cruelty- In factory farms animals are abused in horrendous ways, you can learn more at the PETA website.
2. Health- As a vegetarian you're less likely to suffer from diseases like cancer and heart disease. Plus you'll live up to 10 years longer.
3. The environment- Rainforests are being cut down to raise animals for meat. The less meat we eat, the less rainforest is used to raise animals.
4. World hunger- If people stopped eating meat, the animals wouldn't require so many grains. Did you know as much as 90% of grains are used to fatten animals up? World hunger in parts of the world would be solved if we all gave up meat.
5. Meat is gross- Think about it: when you eat meat you are eating a dead animals body. To think that it had a life and a personality, and just what it had been through makes me sick. Not to mention, diseases are found in most meat. 96% of chicken has a small amount of E. Coli in it, and where do you think Mad Cow originated?

5 short reasons why or why not? Okay.
Why:
1. I've been a vegan for about a year now and I feel healthier and I ran faster on my school's cross-country team last season, so there's a bit of anecdotal evidence.
2. It forces you to try all kinds of delicious new foods.
3. I'm sure it's what the animals would want...
Why not:
1. People put animal products in the stupidest places. You'll have to start reading labels. And you can't even so much as order vegetable soup at a restaurant without having to ask if it's made with animal broth.
2. People are totally intolerant and will make fun of you and tell you that you need meat protein or you'll die even though they're overweight and know nothing about nutrition.

1. Human's were not designed to eat meat. We dont have long intestins. Animals do, but not humans
2. You feel alot better about yourself
3. Animals are abused and it should stop. I wont go into the details of how the animals are killed in the factories but it is not pretty.
4. It's really easy. It's a bit though at first if your whole family is not vegetarian but after a while it's totally worth it. Almost everything can be substitued with tofu, seitan or another meat substiute.
5. Overall health benifits. You save youself from dangerous conditions that you would be more likley to get if you ate meat.
*If you do become vegetarian try the brand Morningstar(green box) which is found in the freezer section at grocery stores.

Yes it is good to be a vegetarian.
1. You exercise your freedom of choice.
2. You help keep the cost of meats under control.
3. On Thanksgiving weekend, you never have to fight over the last turkey or ham at the grocery store.
4. You'll rarely get constipation.
5. If you're with a friend at the local Olive Garden, you don't have to buy a thing since salad and breadsticks are complimentary.

One of the interesting things I've seen is the information gathered from Seventh Day Adventists (SDA). They recommend a vegetarian diet and many long term studies have been done on them showing the health benefits. See the link below.

It is something that could be a long term investment in your health. However, your decision is up to your own personal beliefs.

1. Meat is very good for you and nutritious. Children on meat are shown to progress and thrive much more than children fed veggie diets. 60% of strict vegetarians end up with a B12 deficiency due to lack of meat nutrients, which can eventually prove life threatening.
2. You are meant to eat meat. Your digestive system is perfectly adapted to eat meat AND plants. Things like long intestines and molars are because we eat plants, but things like hydrochloric acid, meat splitting enzymes, etc, are because we eat meat. As mentioned above, there is at least one essential nutrient impossible to get naturally without meat, and several which are very difficult and require exotic plants that wouldn't be naturally available to everyone or all of the year in the wild. If we were herbivores we would have the ability to survive without animal products naturally, like cows can.
3. No animals are saved by vegetarianism. If enough people actually went veggie to make a dent in the meat industry, albeit unlikely, any surplus animals would still be killed because no one would keep animal they can't make money out of.
If we all went veggie all the animals would go and their fields, which previously were a haven for wild animals and flowers, would be destroyed and turned into arable fields, with the loss of wildlife due to loss of habitat and the hefty pesticides in use.
4. If everyone went veggie, while there may be enough food to go round, much of it would be poor quality. Currently we feed that nutritious grain, etc, to animals who turn it into energy and nutrient packed meat, worth many times its weight in plants. With everyone turning to plants which are naturally only got in a certain place at a certain time for certain nutrients we get from meat now, there wouldn't be enough of these plants to go round and people would be malnourished.
5. There's no point, it isn't bad for you, as the links I'm posting will show if you want to look, and it doesnt save animals and in fact you're cutting off a valuable source of nutrients, etc, which third world children would kill for.

That's up to you. Personally, I am the furthest thing from a vegetarian you'll ever see. But that's the way I choose to live.
I respect the decisions of others, as long as they don't interfere with mine.

1) you are not killing an animal (for the best reason - go to the PETA website and follow links for MEET YOUR MEAT) and you won't need 4 more.
