It is named after Herman Gravy who is the brother of Slingin Sam Gravy who is married to Boxcar Bertha Gravy. One day they were all standing around with nothing to do so they said "Let's name that brown looking crap gravy."
And to think that there cousins Andy Scumbag Gravy and Joe Sonavich Gravy thought it would never catch on. lol.

Gravy" is a sort of sauce or dressing, usually made from the juices of meat or poultry. Our English word "gravy" is thought to have been borrowed from the Old French "grane," with a "v" accidentally substituted at some point for the "n" in "grane." The ultimate root of the Old French "grane" may, oddly enough, be our familiar "grain," the original sense being along the lines of "something spiced with grain."

gravy
1381, from O.Fr. grané (with -n- misread for -u- -- the character used for -v- in medial positions in words in medieval manuscripts) "sauce, stew," probably originally "properly grained, seasoned," from L. granum "grain, seed." Meaning "money easily acquired" first attested 1910; gravy train (1927) was originally railroad slang for a short haul that paid well.

The words origins are from the Old French word "grave", possibly a misreading of grane, stew, sauce, from Latin grānātus, having many seeds.
