Yep. I have struggled with iron deficiency anemia and i know it is time to ramp up the iron supplements when I start to get palpitations. After a while of taking them, the palpitations go away. Low iron levels prevent hemoglobin formation. Hemoglobin (part of red blood cells) is responsible for carrying oxygen to the tissue in your body, including your heart. With low hemoglobin, you have lower oxygen delivery, and your heart cells don't like that. They get "irritable" and cause those palpitations. If you are having palpitations, see your doctor. It may be something else. Also, check with him/her before starting any supplements or medications.

About 3 months ago, I started getting heart palpations out of no where. I thought it was from stress and anxiety because I was selling my house. During that time, Red Cross came to my job twice in 3 months and each time I was rejected for blood donations because my iron was 11.8 and the second time it was at 12.0. One day while at work, I was having some terrible palpitations and I decided to go to the doctor. The Dr. ordered an EKG and blood test. While having the EKG done, at first, I was told that there was nothing abnormal but while the leads were taking off, I told the doctor that I felt another Palpitation and she instructed the assistant to leave the EKG on a bit longer. Fortunately, the EKG showed an extra beat and the Dr. said that she wasn t concerned and put me on anti- anxiety medication. I was taking the medication as needed but my palpitation were just getting worst. I call the nurse after a few weeks to ask about my iron and she said that she didn t see a CBC done and therefore, she couldn t tell me what my iron levels were? I decided to do some research and found that low iron can cause heart palpitations, and I went and brought some OTC SlowFe (Iron supplement) and within 4 days.... my palpitations disappeared! I called my doctor to make sure that it was okay to take the iron pills with my other medication. And would you know.... I also found out that I did have iron result in my chart and my iron was at 11.4. I switched doctors 2 weeks ago, and had a complete CBC done and my iron is where it needs to be:) What a relief it is to not have the palpitations anymore. I do recommend going to your doctor before assuming that you have low iron.

If you are VERY anemic from an iorn deficiency then your heart will speed up to try to keep an adequate amount of oxygen in your body. (Anemia = less blood cells available to carry oxygen, so your heart has to work harder to circulate the smaller amount). This can cause both a heart murmer and the feeling that your heart is racing. Usually this is not until your anemia is pretty severe, so if you are having these symptoms, you should get them checked out. Palpitations can also be a problem with the electrical rhythm in your heart, or can be a marker for certain valve problems. Don't assume it's just because of an iorn-deficiency anemia.

yes, I would suspect the diet. You mean that you actually don't eat! That would be a big trigger. Supplements? What is actually in the supplements? That could be a key also. Some supplements can cause palpitations, especially if taken without their necessary processing nutrients. Also, not eating, but are you drinking? Caffeine? Caffeine is the biggest culprit with heart problems such as palpitations. This is really way to complicated for an internet question. I'd get myself, along with the supplements and Cambridge diet details, to a naturopath for a complete evaluation.

It depends on the iron level you are sustaining right now. Are you anemic? Do you have iron-poor anemia? If the answer to these questions is yes, then I say yes, it can cause palpitations. But either way, they are not normal...caffeine has been known to do that too. Check it out with your doctor...the heart and it's problems are nothing to fool around with or wait till they get better or go away. Call him for an appt.

I've never heard of iron deficiency causing palpitations. If you are deficient in iron, you could be anemic (iron-deficienct anemia) which affects your blood. Your heme groups in the hemoglobin in your erythrocytes (red blood cells) will not have the iron they need and then you will not be able to bind the oxygen. This will decrease your effectivity of delivering oxygen to the cells of your body...

Yes, it is also recognised as Heamic Murmur of the heart. Due to lack of oxygen the heart itself is deprived of oxygen and at the same time it has to provide blood to all the organs of the body hence there is palpitation, common amongst females.
Hence removal of cause is equally important e.g bleeding piles, instead of giving Fe pills.
In extreme condition patients may require packed cells transfusion.

Iron-deficiency should not be a direct cause of heart palpitations. Perhaps, an indirect cause, but surely not a direct cause.
