I've been a vegan for two years. I;ve not taken any
drugs of any kind since I've been one. Nor have I
taken any flu shots. Most people run to the doctor
and beg for an antibiotic to rid themselves of
a flu virus. Ironically the doctors won't take them
themselves. They prefer to a let a virus run its
course.

If I had some life threatening condition I'm sure I
would take whatever drug they prescribe.
I'm a vegan not a martyr. If it is totally
unnecessary however, I will continue to avoid
precriptions and otc's.

Again with the taunting. This is yet another question along the same lines as the animal crackers one. You're showing your bias and lack of critical thought.

I am a vegan and have been one for more than 5 years.

Yes. An infection is an infection, and if it has a bacterial source, the way to treat it is with antibiotics. I also get a flu shot every year, despite the fact that these shots can only be incubated in eggs. It's called a compromise. I have numerous health problems, and I have to make compromises. That doesn't mean that I'm so stupid as to risk my life by refusing treatment. It does mean that I have to understand that at times there are no other choices. But when there is a choice, a real choice, I choose to abstain from anything made from or tested on animals.

For the record, not all capsules are made of gelatin.

Even the strictest vegan has living bacteria in his stomach and intestines which are dying anyway! And the preservation of the body is one of the highest duties of a sentient being. So, I feel one should not have any qualms in taking antibiotics when needed.

By the way, I am a vegetarian from birth (vegetables, fruits, Rice, milk and milk products) and have no problem in taking antibiotics if needed.

If you're asking if a strict vegan would be willing to kill all those poor, living breathing bacteria, you're an idiot. They're just bacteria.

If you're asking about animal testing, though... it's a hard decision. Given the choice between dying of an infection and taking an antibiotic that was tested on animals, I think most would choose the antibiotic.

Guy above me has the right idea.

I've seen some who claim to be very strict when it comes to being a vegan take them... however I'm not sure if they were as hardcore as they claimed or not

I think it would depend on if there are any animal by-products in it. I would think it'd be harder to find medicine that hasn't been tested on animals. I dunno, go find a vegan and ask them.

Without trying to be clever here, I wonder if they empty the powder out of the little gelatin capsles first...
