meat that is produced by killing the animal in a very inhumane way. Slitting its throat and letting it bleed to death I think.
Personally, I like a bit of blood dripping out of my steak.

The Halal (Muslim) way of slaughtering an animal is exactly the same as the Kosher (Jewish) method. You cut the throat of the animal, so that the blood runs out. For this you need a very sharp knife and the animal feels nothing after the first 3 seconds.
I have been present at many Halal killings and I can honestly say that I never saw the animal suffer.
It makes sense to drain out the blood in hot countries, because the blood is the first to putrefy. The meat market in Hong Kong, which I visited once and once only, was disgusting. There was blood running in the gutters and the stench was appalling.
In Australia, the meat was not 'hung', so that I would buy steak for the weekend on Thursday. I had a special compartment in the fridge, right under the freezer compartment, called a 'meat saver'. By Saturday it was full of blood.
Most people who object to the 'halal', or 'kosher' method of slaughtering animals have never experienced it.

Consumably meat for Muslims
Many Muslims talk about what they call "Halal Meat" without even knowing their Quranic criteria. Most of those who arrive to the USA or the "West" in General, from other countries, or those who convert to Islam (Submission) in these countries, are usually faced by someone who tell them, "do not eat but the 'Halal meat' ." They usually mean the man-made definition of Halal meat, not the divine definition of "Halal" Meat that is found explained clearly in the Quran.
The Quran teaches that God is extremely displeased with those who prohibit anything that was not specifically prohibited in the Quran, See 16:112-116. The upholding of any prohibitions not specifically mentioned in the Quran is tantamount to idolatry, See 6:142-152. Such prohibitions represent some other god (s) beside God. If you worship God Alone, you will uphold His teachings ALONE and honor the commandments and prohibitions instituted by HIM ALONE.
God very clearly mentioned in the Quran what is prohibited from the food and meat. See 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and16:115. From these verses you can know what is Halal (lawful) meat and what is haram (prohibited).

Halal meat is meat that Muslims, like myself, are allowed to eat. And no, it is not meat that has been killed with the name of God, that is called Zabiha, and not halal. Many scholars believe that meat can be halal but not zabiha. Other Muslims prefer only zabiha meat. (And anlarm, blue_pompeyden, smitha, felicity O, barry B, Susan P, lozzie laws, and done it the answers that you put all refer to zabiha *not halal*, and lozzie laws, they are not left to bleed to death. Their heads are cut off in the quickest way possible so it causes the least pain)

In Islam religion before butchering the animal inorder to feed human beings, one must mention God's name while doing so. The procedure starts by slaughtering the animal, and this does not mean killing it inhuman or causing severe pain as others mentioned, becuase the area where you slaughter the animal from has been proven that it is the cleanest way to insure that the blood doesnt clot and rot inside the animal making it full of diseases. Also mentioning the name of Allah, while doing this procedure is a must inorder for this meat to be halal.

Helal meat is when the animal is killed by cutting its throat with a sharp knife to ensure instant death (therefore less pain). The butcher recites the "besmele" (Bismillahirrahmanirrahim= I begin in the name of Allah (God), the merciful, the compassionate). The animal is then hung upside down so the blood is drained, preventing any clotting and germ formation. It is by no means a barbaric act, as some Christians believe it to be. You have received some good answers below giving good explanations.

Hallal meat is the one Muslims eat. The animals have to be killed in a very specific way: the word "Bismillah", which means "In the name of God" in arabic must be pronounced, the knife's blade must be very sharp, so that the animal is killed in just one movement. The meat is then left for some time so that the blood may come out. Hallal meat includes chicken, lamb, cow, turkey, etc but porc (and other animals of his family) is absolutely forbidden. It's considered a dirty animal. They also can't eat food prepared with blood, death animals and animals that haven't been killed in the name of God. All these are Haram- forbidden

Halal meat is meat that has no gelatin. And Muslim's don't eat pork ,marshmallows, and gummy. Those all are haram, which means has gelatin. Gelatin is something in the inside of an animal's body that has white stuff that grows in the inside which makes the food taste good, and if there is alot of dirt in the body and you eat the gelatin it will make you sick and you may die so it is very dangerous to eat so you have to watch out before you eat pork, marshmallows
