The main problems I have with consuming meat are

1) people eat too much of it. Our bodies are only designed to eat meat at most once a day. More than that, I think you stress out your body too much.

2) meat is processed in an unhealthy and inhumane manner. There's all kinds of yucky stuff injected into animals meant for consumption and the way they're killed is just shameful.

I think for a lot of people, the death factor is easy to ignore because the meat is brought to them prepared and they didn't have to watch the animal die. If I ever faced a situation where I HAD to eat meat, I would prefer it to be an animal I killed myself.

reasons to become vegetarian:
Vegetarians have a low incidence of colon cancer, lowered risk of heart disease, and studies on seventh-day adventists (who are vegetarian) suggest that they have longer lifespans than meat-eaters. I've been veg for 17 years, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life! Go veg - you'll feel a lot better!

Because people are too selfish to understand that animals can feel as much as we do. Tasty food is not a good reason to keep killing animals. If one has to ask why killing animals is bad, then why is killing humans bad? Both can feel, fear, love, hate and seek joy. Both have the same basics and sense for survival. Why should humans be thought of as more special just because WE are the "top of the food chain". Vegetarian food as you cited is nutritious enough for most people. Only a small minority can't take in enough nutrients and are forced into a meat diet, which is forgivable. But those who aren't obligated shouldn't do it. We as a species need to be better moral agents than simply lazy people who want to enjoy and never care about the suffering of others, be it animal or human. India has an enormous portion of vegetarians in it' society. Why can't other cultures do the same?

I question the validity of any arguments on such matters. Humans are omnivores for a reason.

From an anthropological perspective, the switch from a veg diet to mixed diet with the mastery of fire led to many changes in the human anatomy.

Increased protien enabled the development of more lean muscle mass. Veggies take more effort to digest (hence cows have four stomachs) and early humans had significantly larger digestive tracts. As the need for all this processing went away, the surpluss of blood oxygen allowed further brain development and a reduced waistline.

Anciet humans that lived of just veggies were short, wide in the middle, relatively weak, and had significant'y smaller mental acuity.

The primary reasons to switch away from meat would be the usually awful treatrment and processing of meat, most of which is address by free range and organic effort, typically availible at you local mega mart. Some people cite health, but so long as you eat in moderation, don't feel this is a real issue.

I suppose you could have a moral issue with eating animals and this is respectable, I make a point to give a silent prayer of thanks to the animals that sacraficed itself for my benefit.

At the end of the day, it is just a personal choice and if someone needs to be argued into it... well, they won't enjoy it and food is meant to be enjoyed! :)

The way the animals are kept and killed is a horrible thought by itself. It's healthier if you get the right nutrition (not eating all pizza or doughnuts), too. Some people don't eat meat for religious reasons, either.

Anything with feet and eyes should not be eaten. Unfortunately some people get anemic and have no choice but to eat meat.

many reasons:
its much better for the environment http://www.goveg.com/environment.asp
its healthier (there are many ways you can get all the essential nutrients without eating meat)
animals raised for meat are treated horribly throughout their entire lives and even thru the process of dying (everything from debeaking birds, caging animals in small over crowded pens.... http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp )

There is NO way to make someone be a vegetarian through propaganda.

Myself, I lead a VERY organic life. I love hunting & fishing. There is nothing more natural than the gathering of your own food.

In fact, I just picked up a box of venison from the butcher yesterday afternoon.

Also, eating veggies isn't any safer than eating meat. How about those recent eColi outbreaks from spinach & green onions..............

Probably the inhuman way animals are kept and killed. Look it up on google. You'll be shocked. Also it can;t be healthy to eat animals they have been so ill.

What's this the guy below wrote about animals being 'made' for humans to eat!? Who made them? How the hell would you know why animals were 'made'? who are you to decide whole other species purpose is for your pleasure??!!!!

I don't argue with people about vegetarianism.
If they are truly intersested in learning about it
I'll give them literature or answer any questions
they have. But if they refute any part of what
they read or hear I just politely close my
end of the conversation. You can't change
a person's mind if it is already closed.

Once more people start dying from mad cow disease and E.coli and bird flu you won't have to argue about being a vegetarian anymore!! England just killed a bunch of birds to stop people from getting bird flu and Canada just admitted to finding another mad cow! How many birds and cows did they not test that people ate.
