A Mexican style buffet is cheap and easy, just a plate of beans, 1 of rice, 1 of meat, some bowls of shredded lettuce, cheese, chopped tomato, sour cream and salsa. Get one of these warmers from the Local cater store (like Smart and Final) with the Sterno below to keep the beans, rice and meat warm - you can even buy ready made meat like the Chi Chi's right in the meat counter. Then order a TresLeches cake to keep in theme and have little noise makers and lots of balloons the whole thing will come in under $50. Lasagna and salad are super cheap too just get a lasagna frozen, a bagged family size salad and garlic bread. Don't forget Large bottles of soda and tea are cheaper than smaller cans by a factor and skip the fancy plates no one notices anyway. My friend actually used a twin sheet she bought for when the baby moved to a "big" bed and used it to decorate the table she used the pillowcase on the baby's chair and it looked really cute. If you just order a regular cake at the market be sure to say it is a 1st Birthday some stores provide a mini cake for the baby for special pictures of them relishing a "whole" cake!

Have some chips and dip and then have Dominos pizza, go for the 5-5-5 deal. You can get 6 pies for $30, I think you can have one topping on each too.

If not that the cheapest way to feed people is buying fresh meat from the grocery store and making spaghetti and meat sauce or a couple of whole roasted chickens.

Oh you know what, you could get a couple Rotisserie chickens from Sam's Club ( I think they are $4 each) and have people make themselves wraps, so you just set out condiments and lettuce tomatoe and other fixins and it will be fun and yummy.

Walking tacos.

Doritos or Taco chips (you can find these for $1.50 or less at wal-mart per bag
Taco meat
Lettuce
Cheese
Tomatos

put all in a baggie and eat with a plastic fork. Clean up is easy, just throw away the bag and fork when you are done.

Another option is sloppy joes or made rights (depends on what part of the country you are from) and potato salad or chips and carrots with dip.

For the adults: fried chicken drumsticks and wings, noodle salad, potato salad, rice salat, a hearty vegetable soup, puddings and a cake.
For the children: small pizzas (decorate as a small face with eyes and nose out of capsicum), mini hot dogs croissants, a bowl of popcorn, french fries, muffins and a birthday cake.

for the veggies have carrot sticks and other cute vegetable cut up into strips i.e. cucumbers and sweet peppers. put these with salad dips. or make fruit salads with strawberries or melon etc. for the meat eating people have chicken nuggets or small meaty items i.e. scotch eggs or chicken wings. for the junk foodies maybe mini pizzas and put out snacks like crisps or biscuits.

these are only ideas for small snacking foods though im afraid

dont forget the cake =p

Get fixins for deli sandwiches and make a buffet so people can choose what they want. kids, vegetarians, etc can all be picky.

you can make a cake with a mix (super easy and always good) in a 9x13" pan and just ice it in the pan.

chips, maybe some veggies, deli cole slaw or potato salad and you have a party.

My daughters first birthday there was about 75 people.

Chick Filet has a platter of chicken bites that are to die for. I ordered 2 platters of 100 and it cost less then $45.00.

well first of all congrats
try one of those party assorted subs from places like subway or firehouse. definitely have some ice cream for the kiddies chips and soda are good. you could go the pizza route. you probubly already have a cake so thats taken care of. but the subs are most likely the cheapest thing to serve to that many people
good luck and have fun

I served Taco Salad at my kids birthday parties, you can leave all the ingredients separate for people to mix themselves, and most of the ingredients are fairly inexpensive
