Depends on a lot of things. Are you trying to lose weight, or manage blood glucose, or both?

Just on the blood glucose aspect - let your meter set your limits. Test an hour after each meal to see whether the carbs you ate were excessive and raised your BGs. See the source url for more details.

Note that I'm a diabetic, not a doctor, so treat what I say accordingly.

low carb diets are not realy safe. Your body need about 200 + grams a day of good carbs. Some of those low carb diets go way way under that. I have known people that only consume 10 or 20 grams a day. That is unsafe for anyone.

it depends on how low carb you want. low carb diets can range anywhere from 12 grams to 60. just remember to get pleanty of protein on your diet. And low carb diets are perfectly safe. Back in "the day" people didnt sit around eating snicker bars all day. we did eat lower carb. however, taking ALL carbs out of a diet isnt nessicarally healthy either. One of the easiest ways to cut carbs is limit bread, and dont order frys when you go out. (also, if you get a hamburger, fold the patty in half and eat half the bun. or take the top or bottom bun off.) This way, you double the ratio of protein to carb. good luck!

I did low carb for 2 years eating 20-70 carbs daily. Lost a ton of baby weight I'd gained, got rid of my hypertension and diabetes! Holding strong today eating 150-250 of carbs from veggies and whole grains. Feel great and look great too!

No matter what type of diet you are on or if your not on a diet it is best to consume 6 to 8 glasses (6 oz) of water a day. The only time to really restrict fluid intake is if you are told to do so by your doctor because of kidney problems or heart problems.

Hi, Anthony. Since you're asking here in diabetes, I assume you have it. So, the best answer I can give you is that the number of CALORIES needs to be balanced to your metabolism, so you maintain a healthy weight. Carbs have 4 calories per gram, as does protein, and fat has 9 calories per gram. Food labels that list carbs now are referring to grams of carbohydrate. You generally need about 1800-2400 calories per day for a maintenance weight.

To lose weight, you can safely cut 1000 calories per day from your maintenance amount, and you will lose 2 pounds per week by doing so.

Now, the tricky part--your diet should consist of no more that 20% fat, about 20% protein, and about 60% COMPLEX carbohydrates. You can run into as many problems by eating the wrong balance as by eating the wrong amount. So, for a guy who wants to lose weight, let's say your maintenance intake is 2000 calories per day but you've been eating 2800 calories per day to get where you are now--I'd suggest going down to 1600 calories per day for your diet. 60% of 1600 is 960 calories of complex carbs per day, or 240 grams = 240carbs.

A word of caution--while canned and processed food make it easy to figure your carbs, they contain preservatives and additives that are designed to make you hungry and crave certain foods, and this is very BAD. For your diet to work, you need to concentrate on fresh and frozen veggies, and move away from processed foods and trans fats.

One last piece of advice--microwaving veggies destroys the enzymes in them. An enzyme supplement is a good thing for you, as you start your effective weight loss program. Best of luck.
