You are right, sorry mom. I've been a vegetarian for...10 yrs now and I never eat fish. Also, don't eat gelatin, lard, etc. There are a lot of premade veg items at the stores now, it will be easy! Try everything by Morningstar, I think they are the best. Also, incorporate FRESH veggies and herbs with everything you make. Don't just eat cheese pizza and fries! That's not healthy. Eat lots of beans, lots of leafy green vegetables, lots of COLOR. That's the key.

Congratulations on your decision to go veg for Lent!! You'll love it!
Your poor mother has been misinformed. So have a number of other people who are responding to your question.
This is a bone of contention in the veg community. There are people running around calling themselves vegetarian who are not. They use vegetarian as a "catch all" term because describing their particular diet is too lengthy.
Some people who eat fish say they are vegetarians. They are not. Some people who eat chicken say they are vegetarians. They are not. Some people who have just cut back on the amount of meat they eat, say they are vegetarian - they are not. Some people call themselves "convenience" vegetarians. They eat veg when it's convenient to. When all else fails, a double whopper at burger king.
This causes a lot of confusion for your average Joe. He's got a vegetarian friend coming over for dinner so he serves a lovely salmon dinner because he's been told vegetarians eat fish. Then is hurt when his friend doesn't eat it.
Be sure you pick up a few books on vegetarianism from your library. Then your mum won't worry so much.

You're right, vegetarians dont eat any kind of meat. You mother may be confusing vegetarians with the lent version of meat which does not include fish (although it used to). A vegetarian who eats fish is definitely not a vegetarian.

Vegetarians don't eat meat of any kind, including fish. Vegans don't eat any animal products, including milk, eggs and or even honey. You can get a healthy balanced meal without using meat. It does require some food combining however, to get all the amino acids your body requires. Do a search on google or yahoo for vegetarian or vegan and you'll find tons of recipes.

your mom is wrong.
Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, poultry or slaughter by-products.
It is such a simple and internationally accepted definition i fail to understand why so many people get it wrong.
We get this question regularly on this site. For some reason there are many people who beleive it is thier right to redefine words as they see fit. They cause much confusion and most vegetarians woudl not give them the tiem of day. They should just be honest with themselves and call themselves "meateaters"
Ignore the answer below mine. Its just rubbish often quoted by people, but not in any dictionaries or recognised by any respected vegetarian institution. Sure you'll see it on websites, but what does that prove ?
The article quoted is written by someone describing themselves as a "junior copywriter".
Which would you choose, a junior copywriter OR the vegetarian society AND the international veggie Union AND the Oxford English dictionary AND the Collins Dictionary ?????

Officially, vegetarians can eat vegetable matter, eggs and dairy. Even though eggs and dairy aren't veggies by any stretch of the imagination. That has to do with the murder factor. You didn't kill a fully functional animal to eat those things (though you ultimately send the dairy cow and chicken to the factory when they get old or sick).
Your mom is dead wrong. Tie her up at once.
Vegans eat pure veggie.

Hello
It's good to know that you want to switch to vegetarianism.
You know there are different misconceptions about vegetarianism.
Let me make it simpler for you. I am a vegetarian by culture and family. So I was born vegetarian. :))
Ok here it is
vegetarians: pulses, dairy products, fruits, all vegetables, no lard, no meat, no fish, no beef, no gleatin, no eggs, no chweing gums and products that contain animal enzymes or traces of such things. they eat vegetarain cheese which doesn't have rennet.
Jain Vegetrains: Vegetarians who do not eat onions and garlic too. They avoid cetain root vegetables like yam. The don't eat brinjals or vegetables that taste like meat. Most of them don't even eat soya chunks.
Eggitaraians: vegetraians who eat eggs.
Pesco-vegetraians: People who are vegetarians but eat fish. they may or may not eat eggs.
Vegans: Strict vegetarians: People who do not eat eggs, milk and dairy products. they don't use animal products at all. like silk, leather etc.
Fruiarians: Vegetarians who eat only fruits.
So maybe your mom was right to one extent. But essentially vegetrains do not eat eggs and fish.

Some vegs eat fish and shellfishl, some do not. Some eat milk and eggs, some do not.
If they eat eggs/milk, they are called lacto-ovo-vegetarians. (lacto = milk, ovo= egg)
If they eat seafood, they are called pescevegetarians (pesce= fish).
If you are going to give up seafood as well as meat, you need to read up on combining proteins from other sources. You don't just stop eating meat! You have to mix things like rice and beans, hummus and pitas, to get complete proteins. There are 20 essential amino acids, which are building blocks of proteins. 11 your body can make; 9 you must get from food.
If you continue eating dairy and eggs, you should be in good shape.

Actually, your mom is sort of right. There are different levels or kinds of vegetarianism:
Lacto vegetarians are vegetarians that eat dairy products however, they do not eat eggs.
Lacto-ovo vegetarians are like lacto vegetarians, except they include eggs in their diet.
Pesca vegetarians eat everything that lacto-ovo vegetarians do but they also consume fish.
Vegans differ from all the other types of vegetarians as they eat only plant based foods and consume no animal products of any kind.
However, it's up to YOU to decide what YOU want to put in your body.
