Weightage is given to the every stock that forms the part of index. There are some criteria to include some particular stock as a part of index like its market capitalization, its industry, its leadership position. It is reviewed by the committe who deals with review of the stocks in the index. e.g. BSE Sensex. It consist of 30 stocks. If stocks having more weightage goes up, then sensex would also go up.
