The origin of tomato is from Mexican region and they referred to its as tomati. During sixteenth century Spanish explorers introduced tomato into Europe and later Portuguese brought this to India.

Keith Floyd just said in his cookery programme on dishes from Goa,a once Portuguese colony, that it was the Portuguese who introduced chillies into India.Wouldn't know about tomatoes but presume they may have introduced the tomato as well.
