The government wants to make a HPV Immunization mandatory for young girls. Some people are against it. My question:
How can anyone be against something as wonderful as the first cure for cancer EVER in history? How can some parents actually think that their child would not be in danger of getting it. Even IF their daughters don't have sex at a young age, don't they know that there is no age limit when it comes to contracting the HPV? Your child can stay a virgin until age 40 and get it from the first man they are with. How do you justify allowing Polio and other various mandatory vaccinations but, not HPV vaccination for your child? What are your opinions out there?

To the third opinion...YES I think it is fair. They are trying to protect our children and some people don't want to allow the government to save their children's lives..THAT I don't understand!
What good is freedom if you are dead??

I agree that Gardasil is a wonderful thing! I, too, don't understand how people can be so closed-minded to assume that giving a child this vaccine is tantamount to condoning sex at an early age. Given the rampant rates of HPV in our society (80%!!!) it's imperative that everyone that is eligible to get this vaccine to do so. I'm in my mid-30s and wish that I was eligible for it!

I'm on my local American Cancer Society board and we are so excited about advances such as this... yet another step closer to defeating cancer! yay!

The vaccine is NOT a cure for cancer.

As a mother of a 10 year old daughter, this has been on my mind.

What are the long term side effects?

Years ago, HPV was diagnosed as something that you could just get, now it is classified as an STD.

So a virus that is now an STD can cause cervical cancer.

I have sooo much research to do on this before I jump the gun and bring my daughter in for the vaccine, which is a series of 3 vaccinations in 6 months.

Funny, I was just thinking about this last night, too. Weird.

HPV is sexually transmitted, and the immunization is not a cure for cancer, it is protection against HPV which can cause cervical cancer.
If they made the immunization mandatory it would go against what we fight for in the first place... Freedom
There are lots of people out there that use holistic remedies rather than modern medicine, Do you think that is fair, to make them go against there will and beliefs?
I am just playing devil's advocate on this one, I do personally think Gardisil is a great thing, I just don't think it should be mandatory.

I live in Texas and Gov Perry has announced his intentions of making the immunization mandatory. As the mother of a 12 yr old girl, I am not against the immunization in itself. I am, however, against the idea that the government mandate this. HPV is not something a student can catch in the classroom through casual contact. I feel this decision should be left up to the parent. Funny that Gov Perry has ties to Merck also.

I think they should make it a vaccine that they strongly enforce, but don't need. It IS that right now, you can just fill out a form saying it's against your religion or such and your child doesn't have to have it. Yes I think it's a bit soon to push it as a mandatory thing when it hasn't even been approved for a year, but I DO think doing this will educate more people and HOPEFULLY they will give their children more information than "Sex is bad, don't do it". When a child is told NOT to do something they do it. We have to inform them of what can happen, not just say it's bad. I too live in Texas and hope this goes into effect, but they SHOULD make it more known that you don't HAVE to have it.

Also, you can contract HPV from your FIRST sexual encounter, even after you are married. So what is wrong with people? HPV is not a sexually transmitted DISEASE, it is a virus that naturally occurs. People are so stupid.
