Most people infected with HSV-2 are not aware of their infection. However, if signs and symptoms occur during the first outbreak, they can be quite pronounced. The first outbreak usually occurs within two weeks after the virus is transmitted, and the sores typically heal within two to four weeks. Other signs and symptoms during the primary episode may include a second crop of sores, and flu-like symptoms, including fever and swollen glands. However, most individuals with HSV-2 infection may never have sores, or they may have very mild signs that they do not even notice or that they mistake for insect bites or another skin condition.

There are currently 3 different medications that can be taken for herpes. Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) all work in treating herpes. They are NOT a cure. There is currently no cure for herpes. Also, antibiotics will NOT work on herpes. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections - herpes is a viral infection.

I got identified with genital herpes (type 2) about three years back, whilst I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I know a lot of girls say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The worst part was feeling I could never date other men again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone who has sores around her "you know what" area?
