The system comprises the mouth, the nose ,windpipe(trachea),lungs, and the pulmonary blood vessels. Respiration involves the process of breathing and the exchange of (oxygen and carbon dioxide) in the lungs and in cells througout the body. We breathe in air in order to take oxygen into the lungs, and we breathe out to expel the waste gas carbon dioxide, a by-product of respiration. When we breathe, air is drawn through the nose and mouth into the airway and lungs, oxygen is taken from sacs(alveoli) into the pulomonary capillaries. At the same time carbon dioxide is release from the capillaries into the alveoli. This gas is then expelled as we breathe out. An average man's lungs can hold approximately 6 litres (10 pints) of air; a woman's lungs can hold about 4 litre's (7 pints)

Lungs are to spongy organs that occupy a large part of chest cavity.
Windpipe (trachea)extends from larynx to two main bronchi.
Main bronchi branch from base of windpipe(trachea) into each lung and divide into smaller airways(bronchioles)
Bronchioles are small air passages that branch from bronchi and eventually open into aveoli(air sacs) within lungs.
