Before diagnosis, people who have developed type 1 diabetes often experience sudden and unexplained weight loss. This is not because they are dieting or exercising, but rather because their body is essentially being STARVED of insulin, a necessary hormone to help break down glucose. Your body can't metabolize properly.

However, this loss of weight is usually coupled with severe dehydration, nausea, blurry vision, lethargy, and frequent urination.

Insulin dependent diabetics can also experience this weight loss if they are not controlling their diabetes, skipping insulin treatment. This is NOT a healthy way to lose weight however, and will lead to ketoacidosis, and if left untreated, death.

Type 2 diabetics do not experience this phenomena.

no i dont think so.At the beginning of the disease when you first start getting the symptom's you experience weight loss. Like me I'm a type 1 diabetic and i lost allot of weight but now after 2 years with the condition I've put some back on because my body is working properly.
Please don't think too much about weight,if you know everything is in good condition then that's all that matters.

As a diabetic you could lose weight because
1. Of uncontrolled diabetes
2. You have gone overboard in your diet control and exercise.

Keeping your weight close to the ideal over a long period is one of the indicators of good control.

YES and NO....here's why.

..some very well controlled diabetics...will gain weight..due to great control...however....some can lose weight easily being well controlled..due to the fact that they are eating very healthy and exercising..and their bodies are burning the food correctly and ...they are administering a propper amount of insulin..to sufficiently feed all of the cells.

.....some diabetics..who are careless...blood sugars chronically high..will tend to lose weight easily..because their bodies are typically not far from ketoneacidosis..and.. all of their fat is being used up by the hungry cells..that arnt receiving the insulin that it needs. Also....non controlled diabetics tend to be.. heavy..due to..the fact that they think..they can eat ANYTHING..if they ..just administer insulin after eating... injections/pump therapy is no cure..

.....I am a type one diabetic..and.. making sure that I eat correctly and exercise daily is very pivotal.

* Also.. a tendency for MOST diabetics.....= they will be heavier and carry more weight in their STOMACHE/HIPS region...this is also a sign of heart disease..so if you are gaining weight generally in those areas....you may have potential ..to develop something later in life....atleast keep a check on yourself.

yes even type 2 diabetics might lose weight if uncontrolled. carbs are not being turned into energy the way it should bc the insulin receptors aren't working as well as it should. that's why alot of diabetes pills say they cause weight gain, but in actually, you re gaining what your body would usually expel

If not caught in time, kids and adults with type 1 may begin to lose weight.
That is not the case with type 2.

Before I was diagnosed with Diabetes, I lost 10lbs in one day, I also experienced on/off blurry vision, extreme fatigue and thirst. When they diagnosed me my blood sugar was at 36 (in cdn) which normal should be about 5.6
