It all depends on what kind of kidney damage you're talking about. If it's a trauma, say a "bruising" to the kidney's, then yes, they will heal themselves.
If you suffer from a chronic kidney disease that is brought on by a disease, like diabetes, then unfortunately, no, the damage is permanent. If you are on dialysis for some kidney disease, then again, no. The damage is irreversible.
Drugs can damage the kidneys over time, again depending on the drug and the amount of time the kidneys have been exposed to them. Most drugs are absorbed by the liver but, in some cases, the kidneys take the brunt of the absorption.
You should go to one of the websites that will help you understand kidney diseases and, find out what the kidneys can come back from and what they can't.
Good luck.

kidney damage maynot yet be completely reversable but,
as others have already stated it is the reasons why it began which may only hold that key.
chronic medical conditions -no
some drugs do damage kidneys - there it has also been stated to the degrees of exposure and the general health of the person involved.
from abuse - alochol etc. that depends too.
complete damage that could lend you up on an organ donor's list - no way- it's the people who have no hope for survival that reach that list.
dialisys - still gray about mechanical assist , because it could be for only the body needs to be able to work properly again/ or......
well, i'm not a health care proffessional but i really hope you've gotten a way to help ease your fears,
again going to a doctor which specializes in this would be a big step ahead to let you help yourself,
even if you can not get to that kind of doctor, go see your regular one.
you have nothing to loose just by asking someone who can take the time for the labwork you might need to help yourself.

Since you are asking in the diabetes section, I'm going to assume the problem is diabetes-related. You may not be able to get this from anyone else, so here goes--

I realize that conventional health care is necessary and appropriate. That having been said, there are also many things WE can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.

Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:

Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate

Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. A quarter teaspoon twice daily makes a difference. Fenugreek increases blood flow and inhibits the growth of infectious organisms. Everything on the list has a use in fighting diabetes. Learn how to use these herbs and don't fall victim to diabetes needlessly. You can find out about about them on line, or in a book I read cover to cover--

"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313

The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work which came out in February 2005. We both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject if you decide to go that way.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy cheap. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what made the difference for me and mine. Good luck with your kidney damage.

can kidney damage be reversed?

If you have recently discovered protein in your urine (an early sign of kidney damage caused by diabetes) you may take pills called Ace inhibitors, which are used to protect your kidneys from further damage, and keep you away from kidney disease and dialysis.
