They don't prefer it. However, a fellow diabetic may be more understanding of the tough issues experienced by diabetics that non-diabetics neglect to remember or understand.

Diabetics often have shorter life-spans, an average of 15-20 years less than non-diabetics. They can sometimes be moody when blood sugar levels are high or low. They deal with the possibility of aneurysms, circulation, vision, and reproductive problems, and damaged internal and external organs. They have a large cross to bear. It is not an easy life. Be extra nice to them.

Heavy emotional stress can cause heart attacks. Many a diabetic, type 1 or 2, has suffered from heart attacks. Emotional stress is very hard on a diabetic. It hurts them emotionally AND physically. When loved ones such as children and spouses of diabetics leave or die, this puts immense stress on a diabetic causing widely irratic blood sugars and can eventually lead to their death. I've seen it happen. Have you ever known a diabetic who died? What events led to their death? Small problems get big real fast.

Would you like to be stabbing and injecting yourself yourself multiple times a day with needles and blood sugar monitoring equipment? Or have to watch everything you eat so you don't die? And then continue to deal with everything else in life?

Non-diabetics often forget or do not consider this complexity of a diabetic, or they never bother to learn much. The relationship can be chaotic at times, especially if the non-diabetic has other issues of his/her own. However, diabetics are extra thoughtful and intelligient people.

Diabetics know how to handle crises well. They accomplish much in their lives because they know time may be short. They are extra loving parents and spouses. They can often be more physically healthy than a non-diabetic because they are forced to exercise and eat right.

Non-diabetic partners should show extra compassion, a little extra patience, and not be overly sensitive to bg ups and downs of a diabetic. Nondiabetics: Take good care of your diabetic and he/she will take extra good care of you.

Diabetics do not prefer blood tests over urine checks. A Urine scan is PAINLESS. The general practitioner, though, prefers blood experiment due to the fact . . . . 1) Blood experiment are a long way more correct than urine assessments. 2) Urine checks don't work at all unless your blood sugar stage is already at a high level -- then it's too late!

Heck no. I became diabetic three years ago and nothing's changed in any of my relationships. There is one relationship, I would like to change, though. I kinda wish my boss would bring in some bagels instead of doughnuts in the morning.
