Maybe a weekend getaway? If so to where?
Or stay in town and party...limo rides? Helicopter ride over the city?

We live in Chicago.
His family and friends are out of state.
His family will be in town to celebrate his birthday, whether it be that weekend or a weekend thereafter (depending upon our schedules/plans).

how about a mix of everything with a riddle.
put roses that lead to a paper with a riddle...
the riddle will get her to the helicopter
you'll wait for her there to take her to a weekend

I think you've gotten some good ideas. How about combining some of them? Maybe a little riddle clue trail leading to an even that he will like.....bowling, restaurant, etc. Once he gets there all of his friends/family will be there. I did something similar for my husband's 30th. Took him out to a couple of graduation parties (his birthday is in the heart of graduation "season") and at the last one, blindfolded him, drove him around and then parked in the alley behind our house. I got him out of the car, walked him up the back yard to the patio where all of his friends were waiting and took off his blindfold.
No matter what you do, I think he's going to remember most, the fact that his friends and family from out of town are all there. Nothing else is going to matter in the end. Good luck and have fun!

Turning 30 is more of a shock than a surprise.
After the festivities are over, whatever you have planned will be a nice memory, but afterwards, when the reality sets in, surprise her with a wonderful gift that you have set aside. You will know when it is time to give it to her because she will have been crying and you won't have a clue what else to do to cheer her up.
Take my word for it. Nothing says special like a guy that knows his girl and is prepared to take the sting out of life's little hurdles.

if you live somewhere cold get cheap tickets to anywhere in the carribean/mexico/florida for a quick weekend getaway. mmm... sunshine.
if you live somewhere warm - go skiing for the weekdn (if you don't ski being curled up by the fire ain't bad!)
or gather everyone she knows and loves and get a room at a restaurant and suprise her.
or go old school and have a suprise party at a bowling alley or other game type place. beer, pizza, friends, fun times - takes the "turning 30" pressure off a bit
tickets to the hot show in town, a concert, etc. events are always fun.
good luck! its the thought that counts!
and a nice card with heartfelt sentiment is always apprecited.

Does he like golfing? If he does, have a weekend golf thing for him and his closest friends, but you should tell his friends to keep this a secret so it could be a very good surprise for him and he would love you for that.
