Knocks the disease fighting cells down to almost nothing in your body making you vulnerable to rare and recurrent illnesses, chronic respiratory illness, a rare skin cancer that causes large open sores on your body, chronic yeast infections, to name a few. Children may or may not inherit the disease through the mother during gestation. It is highly contagious, meaning you should never, ever, ever, have sex without telling your partner first. People have even been brought up on attempted murder charges by not telling their partner (whether they won or not I don't know, but they still have HIV/AIDS, so they are still the loser) Yes, there are currently different "cocktails" of meds available to keep you alive and somewhat healthy, but they are very expensive, you need to take them - sometimes 20 or more pills a day - at the same time each day, and can cause a multitude of side effects. These meds still don't stop other illness from taking over your body much more severly than they would if you didn't have HIV/AIDS.

HIV:
HIV infection comes in three stages: acute infection, chronic infection, and AIDS.
Acute HIV infection is the earliest and shortest stage of HIV infection. Not everyone gets symptoms, but most people come down with a flu-like illness three to six weeks after infection. The symptoms are the same as flu or mononucleosis: fever and fatigue lasting for a week or two. There may or may not be other symptoms:
A blotchy red rash, usually on the upper torso, that does not itch
Headache
Aching muscles
Sore throat
Swollen lymph glands
Diarrhea
Nausea
Vomiting
AIDS:
The symptoms of AIDS are primarily the result of infections that do not normally develop in individuals with healthy immune systems. These are called opportunistic infections.
Patients with AIDS have had their immune system depleted by HIV and are very susceptible to such opportunistic infections. Common symptoms are fevers, sweats (particularly at night), swollen glands, chills, weakness, and weight loss.
See the signs and tests section below for a list of common opportunistic infections and major symptoms associated with them.

This is taken directly from my source.
Opportunistic infections are common in people with AIDS. HIV affects nearly every organ system. People with AIDS also have an increased risk of developing various cancers such as Kaposi's sarcoma, cervical cancer and cancers of the immune system known as lymphomas. Additionally, people with AIDS often have systemic symptoms of infection like fevers, sweats (particularly at night), swollen glands, chills, weakness, and weight loss. After the diagnosis of AIDS is made, the current average survival time with antiretroviral therapy (as of 2005) is estimated to be more than 5 years, but because new treatments continue to be developed and because HIV continues to evolve resistance to treatments, estimates of survival time are likely to continue to change. Without antiretroviral therapy, death normally occurs within a year. Most patients die from opportunistic infections or malignancies associated with the progressive failure of the immune system.

it attacks the immune system of the person and when they get sick they can not get better as if someone who does not. It is a terrible deisease to have. HIV means that you dont have the aids virus yet but it could turn into aids. Sometimes this virus wont show up unitl five to ten years from now or it could show up real quick

HIV kills you slowly, could take years, some can even live a full life with HIV.
AIDS kills you alot faster. Shorter life span when contracted. They both eat away at your immune system and infections and other diseases can be contracted with ease. It's got the same concept as cancer. Usually, the only prescription for advanced stages is Morphine, only to kill the pain until they die which is inevitable.

Basically it cripples your immune system, leaving you open to diseases that wouldn't normally kill you. Your body has things in you that it normally can keep at bay, but during later stages of AIDS - it gets harder and harder, and eventually it succumbs.
It's all to do with your T-Cells and what not.
You don't die from AIDS, you die from AIDS-related causes.
