Oxygen for copd/ emphysema is proven to prolong life, and increase quality of life. This is why it is prescribed.

If you have a condition that makes your blood oxygen levels low you are at greater risk of developing heart failure due to the extra effort required by the heart.

Prescribing oxygen also reduces admissions to hospital with breathing problems so can actually reduce costs to the health service in some cases.

Patients have to be assessed firstly to see if oxygen is appropriate for them.

This is usually done in hospital and is based on their blood oxygen saturations. Most people with a O2 blood sats at around 95% or above...if its below this - especially below 85% etc patients will get short of breath. If they have an underlying breathing disorder such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease this makes it quite difficult for them to get their breathe..and is dangerous if they also have any heart problems.

Not all patients with breathing problems need oxygen if their O2 sats are fine.

Plus some people over use it - gaining no benefit but just getting themselves a little high..

Its also a huge explosion/fire risk to have cyclinders or concentrators in the house!

Oxygen is required for life, it is how our bodies break down food to run. Normally air (20% Oxygen) is best, but in case of compromised lungs or atmospheric pressure etc. we use oxygen.
