Death is defined as no heart beat and no breathing. Inactivity in the brain is called brain death and kept alive on a machine, but, you need a heart beat to do that.

I think death can be defined as state when the heart ceases to beat because the brain stops functioning only when it does not receive oxygen.since oxygen is transported through blood and as the heart pumps blood only when the heart stops the brain stops functioning

When the heart stops, it can be reactivated. When the electrical activity of the brain stops, brain death takes place.
Death occurs in two stages, viz (1) somatic, systemic or clinical and (2) cellular or molecular. The term 'death' is commonly employed means somatic death. It is due to complete and irreversible cessation of the vital functions of the brain, heart, and lungs. In somatic death, though life ceases in the body as a whole, it persists in its component parts, viz, the tissues and cells, which respond to chemical, thermal, or electrical stimuli. As for example, the pupil dilates with atropine and constricts with physostigmine. After somatic death, the tissues and cells continue to survive for varying period depending upon their oxygen requirements. When these individual tissues and cells die, it is termed as cellular or molecular death.

DEATH in India is defined as COMLETE CESSATION OF RESPIRATION AND HEART ACTIVITY.
the actual means of death in clinical practice is " BRAIN DEATH--- Means When Brain stops giving signals/ activity" but this has to be checked by EEG (electro encephalogram)
this is certain if heart stops beating then if no assistance is given to patient then in 10 MINUTES OF STOPPING OF BEATS is the limit to complete damage to brain,i.e. BRAIN DEATH
Finally the stoppage of brain acitivity is DEATH
