that I've had this for over a yr now--I just found out by seeing another Dr. My pulmonary BP is 41. I've been reading about PAH & it's scary. I'll see a pulm. Dr. next wk. When can I be a candidate for a heart/lung transplant? (I have severe tricuspid regurg. after having mitral valve repair) Any thoughts are well appreciated! Thank you!!

Pulmonary hypertension is scary...but the treatment options have improved a lot in recent years, so do have some hope. I think a transplant is used as a last resort -- it is a risky surgery and you would need to be on immunosuppression long term afterwards -- so maybe right now it would be better to focus on medical treatments for the pulmonary hypertension. If you just found out, I bet they have not tried many treatments yet.

Another thing to ask the doctor is whether anything can be done about the cardiac problem, since that sounds like it is the cause of your pulmonary hypertension.

I hope your doctors are able to help and I hope you feel better soon.

I'd try and treat the disease medically as long as possible. Generally transplantation is a last resort, and usually only last 5-15 years (depending on the patient and the organs). When you say your pulmonary BP is 41, are you referring to the mean pressure or the systolic pressure? Also, how was this reading obtained? Was it following your MVR surgery? If your doctor kept this info from you for over a year, I definitely wouldn't be going back to him. After working in healthcare for 15 years, I've seen many doctors who were just too busy to give their patients the attention they deserve. However, I have also seen some very excellent physicians go above and beyond the call of duty. There are good docs out there, you just have to look a little harder to find them:)

Good luck:)

Then you need to see another Dr who WILL answer your questions. Drs who don't answer you aren't really very good Drs.
Find one that you can reply on. Getting the help you need won't make it so scary once you know...
Good Luck !!! [[[ ]]]
