Usually when you show up at your doctors office and your complaining of being very thirsty, and urinating a lot and they check your blood sugar with a finger ***** and it is elevated, they then move on to a chem 12. or a complete metabolic panel which not only shows your diabetic, but indicates how well your kidneys are functioning and your other electrolytes related to diabetes.

What type of diabetes are you asking about? Most people only think of Type 2 diabetes, not Type One (insulin dependent). This can make a huge change in how you test. But the fasting glucose level would be a great way of testing. Call a doctor and ask about having this done on a day you can fast for hours specified by doctor.

However, you do need the Chem 12 once in a while even if you are not diabetic, but it is especially important for a diabetic because they usually have other things that need treatment e.g. cholesterol, or the test is valuable for establishing a standard for tracking organ deterioration e.g. kidneys, pancreas, liver.
