A chem 12 will tell if you are a diabetic. If you have an elevated glucose on your chem 12, it starts a cascade of test which include a glycosated hemoglobin.
Usually when you show up at your doctors office and your complaining of being very thirsty, and urinating a lot and they check your blood sugar with a finger ***** and it is elevated, they then move on to a chem 12. or a complete metabolic panel which not only shows your diabetic, but indicates how well your kidneys are functioning and your other electrolytes related to diabetes.

What type of diabetes are you asking about? Most people only think of Type 2 diabetes, not Type One (insulin dependent). This can make a huge change in how you test. But the fasting glucose level would be a great way of testing. Call a doctor and ask about having this done on a day you can fast for hours specified by doctor.

An A1C will give you a perfect answer. The fasting morning blood glucose is usually accurate. A glucose tolerance test is next in the line of tests but is an unnecessary inconvenience. However, you do need the Chem 12 once in a while even if you are not diabetic, but it is especially important for a diabetic because they usually have other things that need treatment e.g. cholesterol, or the test is valuable for establishing a standard for tracking organ deterioration e.g. kidneys, pancreas, liver.

A CBC stand for complete blood count. It checks your red and white blood cells. The only way to test for diabetes is a fasting sugar test. Your sugar levels should be around 5 - 6....
