Sushi is more than raw fish it is cooked, fish, beef and vegetables both raw and cooked as well. It is best to grab a cookbook and familiarize yourself with the different types so you can order with confidence. In a superior Sushi house you can trust the sushi chef and ask what his specialty is - he loves to show his stuff than sit back and enjoy. I love sushi and make it as well but it took me a while to find out about the Sushi chef "challenge". Quite often they have special items from Japan or a local farmer and they love to show off new foods. If you don't like wasabi simply ask they not serve it and if you like some other sauce they have ask what goes best with it. I found that by asking the chef for his input I got fab choices like lobster sashimi, fried baby crab and even octopus was soo good. Find an excellent and well recommended Sushi house and ask the chef! Good Luck!

ask the waiter!

the first time I went for sushi (years ago), my sis & I ordered. We thought it was per piece of sushi (not 1order of a roll was
6-8 pieces). We went to one of those places where they give you a sushi order form to fill out, not sure they do that anymore. But the waiter came back and said "you guys have over 300 pieces of sushi here!" So we took his suggestions & had him order for us. always ask. it was embarrassing!!!

Be free, explore at your own pace. I was lucky enough to have a boyfriend that loved sushi and was introduced me to it in steps at a great restraunt in NJ. Go slow, try the salad, miso soup, and then go with a roll with ingrediants you like. You can escalate from there.
We ended up with the "Love Boat" which is a romantic mix of a bit of everything. Just watch the Wasabi! Wow, I love hot things but beware, unless you have a cold, this packs a punch, lol. I was coughing so badly I grabbed his beer (I ordered tea..wuss) and chugged! (Ours was the "real wasabi..read below)
Good luck and enjoy!
PS....Wasabi (wah-sah-bee) - Japanese 'Horseradish.' This is the small lump of green stuff that looks sort of like clay. Best done in extremely small doses. The actual rhizome is not related to American Horseradish except by name, but unfortunately, the 'wasabi' most often served is not real wasabi, but powdered and reconstituted American Horseradish with food coloring. Real wasabi is difficult to find in most restaurants, but is sometimes available upon request (and worth it, even with a surcharge, in my opinion). It is quite different in appearance (slightly more vegetal in color and obviously a ground up lump of rhizome, not powder) as well as taste. Real wasabi has a hotness that does not linger, and compliments and enhances the flavor of sushi rather well.

OK Sounds really weird I know BUT, Unagi which is eel is really good. It doesn't taste slimy or anything. Trust me order it, dare yourself to if you have to. Try it once and I can almost assure you, you will like it if not LOVE IT. And you get bragging rights if your friends haven't had it. BTW its cooked so it isn't raw
