What ingredients go into a greek salad? I already have the dressing. Can I get feta cheese at the regular grocery store?

This is the recipe for Traditional Greek Salad...NO dressing needed...you can buy feta at any supermarket these days, but I like purchasing mine from my local cheese or gourmet food shop...there are 3 types of feta I have come across - Greek, French and Bulgarian...

4-5 large, ripe, tomatoes
1 large red onion
1 cucumber
1 green bell pepper
1/4 pound of feta cheese, sliced or cumbled
dried oregano
sea salt
top quality extra virgin olive oil
1 dozen olives (Kalamata, green Cretan olives, etc.)
pickled pepperoncini hot peppers (garnish)
1 tablespoon of water

PREPARATION:
Wash and dry the tomatoes, cucumber, and green pepper. Clean off the outer skin from the onion, wash, and dry.

Cut the tomatoes into bite-sized irregularly shaped chunks, removing the core. Salt lightly. Slice the cucumber into 1/4-inch slices, cutting slices in half (whether or not you peel the cucumber is a personal choice). Salt lightly. Slice the pepper into rings, removing the stem and seeds. Salt lightly. Slice the onion into thin rings.

Combine the tomatoes, cucumbers, green pepper and onion in a large salad bowl. Sprinkle with oregano, pour olive oil over the salad, and toss. Just before serving, place the feta on top of the salad, either as a slice or crumbled and toss in some olives. Sprinkle the cheese with oregano (and pepper if desired), mix the oil and water and drizzle over the top, and serve, garnished with hot peppers.

Boretawork is giving you the best instructions - greek salad (choriatiki) does not contain lettuce (this is another kind of greek salad). In any case, be careful what feta you use: feta is a registered name for cheese made from specific milk in a specific way - it is like bying blue cheese instead of roquefort, therefore danish or bulgarian white cheese are not the original feta.

I make it with Roma tomatoes, Red onion, cucumbers, a little bit of chopped fresh mint, and lots of feta cheese. And you should be able to buy Feta in a brick or in chunks at any grocery, depending on where you live. I usually get sundried tomato feta or garlic and herb feta. But sometimes just plain old Feta. Serve it with some pita bread and felaffel. Yummy!

Yes, every grocery store has now a variety of feta cheeses

1 bunch leaf lettuce
2 cucumbers
4 large tomatoes
1 small yellow onion

Garnish:
Greek black olives
feta cheese

Dressing
1 part red wine vinegar
1 part olive oil
crushed garlic
salt and pepper to taste
2 pinches sugar

Chop lettuce and onion finely. Chop tomatoes and cucumbers coarsely (about 1/2”). Combine and garnish to taste. One of the simplest items we prepare, this salad draws many compliments. Use real Greek olives packed in brine.

You can get feta cheese from the market in the sliced cheese aisle. It will be crumbled in a plastic container. The Greek or Mediterranean one is seasoned with basil and tomatoes.

Also, add some olives to your salad, and a balsamic vinegarette.

Romaine lettuce, black olives (not the water-backed soogy ones that come in the can!), stuffed grape leaves, green peppers, radishes, tomatoes, cukes, feta cheese and anchovies.
