I think you've misheard the news. It's norovirus. Used to be called Norwalk virus.
Norovirus has been in the news a lot lately because there have been a lot of outbreaks in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, cruise ships and jails. Generally, it spreads like wildfire in confined environments. Luckily, it is a brief illness and generally doesn't kill people.
Have I ever had noro? Probably. It's common enough. Most people blame their gastrointestinal illnesses on food, but it's far more likely to be a viral issue.
Norovirus is a HIGHLY contagious virus that causes the "stomach flu." Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Illness durations is generally 72 hours, with an onset of about 12 hours after exposure.
Here's how you get Noro:
* Eat food that has been contaminated with the virus, whether naturally-occuring contamination, or mishandled by a sick person.
* Change diapers for a sick baby (or elderly person) and not wash your hands properly afterwards
* Use the toilet after a person sick with Noro has vomited or had a diarrheal episode in there (Norovirus can linger in the air after being spewed out of a sick person)
* Come into close contact with a person sick with Noro (again, this virus can become airborne, and it's really hardy)
There is no cure for Noro, but it's short. If you get sick, do NOT take antibiotics. Instead, get bedrest and drink both Gatorade and water to maintain your fluid balance. Afterwards, clean your bathroom with bleach and Lysol so no one else gets sick, too.
