Yes. Stevia is a better alternative for sugar. Most conventional sugar are acidic. Stevia can help reduced your diabetes. Its a bit costly. But better than the hospital medicines and treatments!

I use it all the time. And since you have an interest in herbs, check this out--

I realize that conventional health care is necessary and appropriate. That having been said, there are also many things WE can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.

Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:

Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate

Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. A quarter teaspoon twice daily makes a difference. Fenugreek increases blood flow and inhibits the growth of infectious organisms. Everything on the list has a use in fighting diabetes. Learn how to use these herbs and don't fall victim to diabetes needlessly. You can find out about about them on line, or in a book I read cover to cover--

"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313

The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work which came out in February 2005. We both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject if you decide to go that way.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy cheap. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what made the difference for me and mine. Best of luck.

Stevia is safe and lends a sweet taste to food stuff without raising the blood sugar level.
But there is a slightly different taste to it than sugar. You can clearly sense this difference towards the end of the chewing process, for every bite or sip. The taste changes further if you've heated your stuff to high temperatures after adding Stevia to it. There are different ways of using stevil leaves and therefore the taste may be different.

But it is certainly safe compared to sucralose or asparteme. So it is certainly worth a try.

Stevia is good for many people, it neither elevates or drops your blood sugar, but is extremely sweet and you need just a tiny bit

Stevia is a noncaloric natural herb. The taste isn't perfect, and some studies show it to lower sperm count.

I use it in place of most sugars. ( I'm semi-macrobiotic..) Although I am not a diabetic and do not want to give you wrong advice. My grandma is type2 and uses it all the time. Never use aspartame, no matter what they tell you..it is pure poison. Ants won't even touch it.

My dad uses it. His only complaint to me was that it will not dissolve in cold drinks. He's tried the dried powder and liquid and neither wwill dissolve in cold drinks. Otherwise it's a good alternative to sugar.

Stevia is good, but expensive,I think Splenda is just as good and less expensive, if you have NIDDM I think you can use Splenda,it worked for me and without headaches I got from aspartame.

yes... it is the best alternative to sugar. It beats artificial sweeteners any day... you may have to get used to the taste though.
