No, they did not take the Nasal Decongestant out of Dayquil. It contains the pain reliever acetaminophen (active ingredient in tylenol), Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant) and
Phenylephrine (nasal decongestant). I took this info right off the bottle.

I think maybe you are refering to pseudoephedrine, which has indeed been taken out of a number of OTC cough/cold remedies because of it's abuse, and use in the manufacture of illegal street drugs, namely methamphetamine. It IS used as a decongestant, and to the best of my knowledge is still available in some OTC preparations, but most states require the purchaser to "sign" for the meds, (example: Sudafed), before they can be purchase so they can track the amount being purchased by individuals.

Basically, dayquil (and nyquil) have replaced the "psuedoephedrine" decongestant with "phenylephrine" decongestant, so those, and many other OTC remedies still have a decongestant of some sort.

I believe they took out the decongestant so it could still stay out from behind the counter in California. New law in California, certain decongestants can be sold OTC but only 1 package at a time and you have to ask for it from behind the pharmacy counter (what a nuisance)
