If you're having yearly pap smears like you're supposed to, you won't ever have chlamidia for more than a year. It will show up when they send your smear samples to the lab. And if you're sexually active, you should be getting checked regularly anyway.

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in US. THere were about 650,000 cases reported in the year 2000. You don' really feel anything but if you have fever and lower abdominal pain, bladder infection or urinary tract infection (UTI), you may have Chlamydia. The MD may do pelvic exams and would tell you that your cervix is infected and that you may have pelvic inflammatory disease or PID. As for signs of PID, you may have chronic pelvic pain and may have problems becoming pregnant later on. For the doctor to diagnose chlamydia, discharge from your cervix may be collected and sent for culture (meaning: let the Chlamydia bacteria grow).
