Winter is definitely one of the worst times of the year to catch a cold - who wants to be indoors slurping chicken soup when they could be skiing, sledding or going out? When I have a cold, I make sure that I wash my hands frequently and get plenty of rest. Rubbing Vicks medicated ointment under my nose can help if I'm stuffed up, and if I've got a sore throat, throat lozenges and gargling saltwater really make a difference. Warm baths can help with aches. If you've got long hair, it's a good idea to blowdry it afterwards so that you don't lose body heat. If I've got a cough, I take some cough syrup. I also make sure I take some medication such as Tylenol, Advil Cold & Sinus or Cold FX every few hours. All of these work tremendously. Hot water bottles can keep you warm in your bed and lemon-honey tea can clear up your throat and help if your voice is scratchy. Staying hydrated with juice and water can help with sore throats and headaches. Do not drink more water than you should, or usually would, however. Hot soup is another way to get the fluids you need. Soup will clear your nasal passages and soothe a sore throat. To prevent getting a cold and to prevent others from catching this annoying bug, you should change your pillowcase every 2-3 days. Do not permit anyone to drink or eat using glasses or utensils that you have already used. Don't be afraid to take the day off of work or school - this way, you'll be rested and you'll avoid spreading your cold to others. Here's to staying healthy this winter season!

Personal fav is a combi of herbal chicken soup with Honey Lemon tea.. or if you are in Asia, go for seafood Tom Yam (just the soup) with Ginger Tea with Milk. Get some Menthol Crystals with a bowl of hot water and a towel to unblock your stuffy nose.

PLEASE try these 3 remedies...EVERY time I feel run-down or get that tickly feeling in my throat I take these 3 things and it NEVER turns into a full-blown cold.
1) Olive Leaf Extract by "Herb Pharm"....it's in liquid form, and has no side effects...it immediately goes to work to kill any viruses in you...and it's all natural.
2) "JarrowDophilus", by "Jarrow Formulas"...it will keep the healthy "flora" in your body in perfect balance which keeps your immune system strong.
3) "Emergen-C" Vitamin C packets by "Alacer"
All three can be purchased at "Whole Foods Market", possibly "Trader Joe's", or call your local health food store to inquire about these 3 products.
EVERY friend and family member who has taken this advice, hardly ever gets sick.
For your throat: "Peaceful Mountain--Throat Rescue"
You will NEVER find a more powerful throat spray which is all-natural....soothing, fast acting, and kills bad bacteria on contact.
I drink lots of organic green tea too !!
You'll see!! :) Get well soon!

Awwww, I was going to answer this except you said vitamin C and rest were not considered :-( That is my home remedy, I buy a huge jug of orange juice and sleep as much as I can. I am rarely sick, though, so I doubt anything from me would even help you. My coworkers take much time off from work and buy all these expensive remedies and even dance in front of their fireplace.....just kidding......but they look so miserable. I just try to eat/drink what my body seems to need at the time and try to help them out.....by dancing in front of their fire with them when they need some company :-) just kidding, again.....

this works for me when I have cold, I go outside the house and turn my back on the sun and let it heat for 30mins or hour whatever time you want to, then later my colds are gone...
