My friend stayed at my house last night, shes a diabetic and her sugars were high, well she ended up throwing up all night and wasn't getting better at all. She was constantly throwing up and was hot and exhausted. Did i do the right thing by calling 911? They started fluids right away and admitted her to the hospital, her sugars were over 600. She was in ICU so they could monitor her today/tonight. How long will they keep her in the hospital? Shes a single mom and i am watching her 3yr old daughter and had to miss work as my friend had no one else to watch her and abviously cant have her at the hospital with her. Her daughter knows shes sick and in the hospital and was here when they took her away and we went and saw her today. But misses her mom alot.

You were a caring Friend. If they admitted her and she was in ICU she was critical. You are a great friend and she is lucky to have you!!!

Yes, you did the best thing that you could have possibly done for her. Diabetics should be concerned when they sugar gets over 200-300 after a meal. If you had not called 911, your firend could have died in your apartment and then where would her little girl end up? The hsopital will generally keep a diabetic in the hospital until they get their sugar levels stabilized back into the normal range and they will talk with the patient about how to make her medications and how to eat, and how to keep better check on her levels. Right on for calling 911.

Yes, You were absolutly right in calling 911.

She could have went into a diebetic coma if you wouldn't have. That is what happened to my dad which he never came out of and he died from it.

When a diabetics sugar gets to high it can send there system into overload and cause that. You did the RIGHT thing! Because if you wouldn't have done it then she might not be here today! You are a really good friend and your friend I bet is really thankful to have you. :)

Also my dad for no reason at all would have surges in his sugar levels. He would watch what he ate and check his sugar reguallary but sometimes it would either go way off the scale or go way to low causing him to do what your friend did last night.

Sometimes these things just happen and the person can't control them. You just have to be careful. My dad before he became a type 2. Was a type 1 and he had to have sugar or he would go into fits and sezures. Then something made him go from boarder line to type 2 as he got older and for no reason at all his sugars would go off the scale. Even when he was eating right and doing all he could to manage it. Sometimes these things happen and I am just glad that she was around you when it did.

You were absolutely right to call 911. With a sugar of 600 she could have gone into a diabetic coma and never recovered. They will keep her in the hospital until her sugars are under better control. Good Luck and God Bless.

Uh...YEA! Not sure why you asked that question. If your friend was so serious when they took her in that it landed her in ICU, of course you did the right thing. Do you think it would have been better to let her die at your house? Strangers on this site can't tell you how long your friend will be in the hospital. How about being smart and calling the hospital and talking to the nurses? If you can't handle the responsibility to taking care of her daughter, then ask your friend if there is a family member or another friend that she would trust to care for her.

Yes you did the right thing. Sounds to me like she was going into DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis, and she needed the medical attention. I would say she should be out of the hospital fairly quick once her blood sugars are back to normal. It should not be very much longer, unless she has some other problem going on in her body that causes this all to happen. Ask the nurse what is wrong and how much longer they expect her to stay. She will be able to tell you.

You probably kept her from going into a diabetic coma, this would have been a lot scarier for the child. Keep reassuring the child that the doctors will take good care of her mother and that mom will be home as soon as she gets better, let her make mom a card or bring her a stuffed animal to keep her company. You did the right thing. Good luck, and stay positive.

Yes you were right to call 911. As for watching her daughter and how long she will be in the hospital it shouldn't be more than a day or two. It will depend on what her body does with the Dr. instructions left at the nurses desk.

You definatly did the right thing. She could have many many things wrong with her. If she has the flu it's so bad for diabetics to get. You did a good thing taking her to the hospital. If you can't watch her daughter does she have any family in the area that could? But you did a wonderful job, good for you, your a good friend.

Yeah, I'd say you did the right thing. My question would be, however, why isn't she controlling her diabetes through diet , exercise and insulin use? If she knows she's a diabetic, she also knows what she needs to do to control it. Is you friend suicidal? Why does she think she has the right to blow off controlling her disease and dump her responsibility off on you? Keep track of what you lost in wages by missing work. She owes you.Yes, I know I sound like an unsypathetic b****. However, my husband is a diabetic. He can tell you everything he ate for the last three days and can estimate what his blood sugar will test by what he's been eating. Unless your *friend* became a diabetic YESTERday, SHE CAN TOO. Why is she playing this game? Her doctor should give her a psychiatric referal.
Best wishes. You're going to need them.
