Five big causes of chronic cough:
1) Infection. Some viral bronchitis cases can cause coughing for several weeks but will eventually clear. Certain "atypical" bacteria can cause chronic cough and will require antibiotic therapy. Less commonly, things like fungal infections and TB may be to blame.
2) Asthma/COPD (Chronic obstructive lung disease).
3) Sinusitis with post nasal drip. Often seen with chronic allergies.
4) Acid Reflux. A very common cause of coughing due to the acid coming up and irritating the trachea and larynx.
5) Medication side effects, mainly from ACE-Inhibitors which are used for high blood pressure. About 30% of people on these medications report a chronic cough.

There are too many diseases that can start with a cough to be able to give a definitive answer. The best thing to do is check with a doctor to find out if any of these conditions are causing the coughing.
