You haven't mentioned anything about your birthday person or whether they're a female or male, which might make a difference in your choice of themes. Turning 40 for men is different than turning 40 for women! Anyway, if you are having a birthday "girl", I'd suggest underplayed elegance with a side of humor. Think about flowers for the center pieces. Party favors might be edible ones, such as See's truffles either in their box's with ribbon or in tule with flowers and ribbon. Or, you can consider gift bags, which seem to be a rage these days, and include: chocolate, a nice pen, a favorite poem about getting older and the joys of menopause, bubble bath et al. On the wild side, you could use a theme about women coming into the best times of their lives sexually and emotionally and go from there. For the guys? Well, humor goes a long long way here.

Yes, it absolutely depends on whether the lucky birthday person is a man or woman. Here are some ideas that I believe would work for men or women.

What about a Vegas theme? You can go to Party City and buy very inexpensive decorations (i.e., dollar signs, dice, cheesy Elvis glasses, sparkly stuff). Play a stereo or iPod and use your DJ money to rent a dealer or two to come in and play Texas Hold 'Em or poker or 21 or something. Fun for all. Party favors can be just about anything if you do this.

Same for a Mardi Gras style party. You can have southern/cajun style food, get a bunch of beads (super cheap), masquerade-type masks, etc. Do karaoke (you can rent a machine, buy a relatively inexpensive one, hire someone, or even check out On Demand on your cable tv. We have karaoke options on ours.) That's usually a crowd pleaser regardless of the fact that most people "claim" to be too "shy" to sing in front of everyone. :-)

Good luck!

get a laptop or someone with a laptop for music just make playlists for your party and rent a sound system for the night. also easy center pieces: go to the dollar store and buy votive candles and holders as well as other jars to put candy "pills" in and label them with labels like "hair replacement pills" and stuff like that.
