The window period for HIV is 3 months, meaning that's how long you need to wait to ensure a reliable test. Some people will test positive in as little as 2 weeks, but many people have false-negative results if you don't wait the full 3 months.

People who contract HIV today and strictly adhere to their antiretroviral medications are very likely to live more than 20 years, and probably longer. The new medicines that are out there have turned HIV into a chronic yet manageable disease.

HIV testing is a simple process by which the doctor or nurse takes a tube of blood and tests for the virus actively found in HIV. They say the window period is anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months suggesting that a patient get tested every 6 months.

The HIV test used in this area of Michigan is oral. They take a cue tip swab of the inside of your cheek, and give you a number for anonymity. You call them in a couple of days and give them the number and they tell you the results. Sometimes they ask for your name so give an alias.

The test gives a result if you picked up an immune response. It varies but it will show by 6 months. It's anonymous and free. Get careful. It is out there. I took care of AIDS patients.
