I took my 3 year old to the ER last night for a 103.9 F temperature & a cough. They did a chest x-ray and the doc said "it was a bit fuzzy" and he put her on antibiotics. Did a bit fuzzy mean anything specific like bronchitis, or what? Maybe it is going to turn into something bad and better safe then sorry?

That doctor should get some "fuzzy" in his brain-- I hate these docs that think we are morons and we don't understand medical terminology and they are too busy to explain it to us. A bit "fuzzy" is NOT a diagnosis but I assume he means there is an infiltrate in her lung or lungs that looks like pneumonia- now the ER doc is not the Radiologist- he is the guy that really reads the xrays and puts the diagnosis on the xray- so, call your pediatrician- tell him about this ER doc's diagnosis and what meds your daughter is on, have him get the REAL XRAY REPORT- have him call you back and explain to you what is going on with her- and when you should follow up with your pediatrician and most importantly, WHAT TYPE OF TREATMENT OTHER THAN JUST THE ANTIBIOTICS SHOULD YOUR DAUGHTER BE ON OR YOU SHOULD BE DOING FOR HER WHILE SHE IS AT HOME.
If it is pneumonia, once her fever breaks they want her walking and coughing- the coughing is to get the mucous OUT of the lungs...call your pediatrician and have him explain what should be done for her home care---sometimes they are admitted so they can receive oxygen to make it easier for them to breathe.

Good luck to you and your little girl---and in the meantime, if she seems to be getting worse rather than better, take her to the hospital ASAP.

Ok bit fuzzy means that her lungs in the xray were a little bit hazy .... it could mean a lot of things ... but it coupled with the temp. and cough would suggest a pneuomonia or bronchiolitis .... children get bronchiolitis more commoner than bronchitis ... but that is caused by a virus and the doc would have given her anti-viral rather than antibiotic .... so i would presume that ur doc wanted to play it safe and has made a working diagnosis of pneumonia when he gave her the antibiotics .....

hope she feels better soon

Sounds to me like you have received the "ER treatment."..you probably waited for hrs in the ER scared for your daugherter's life and the the doc came in and said " it looked a bit fuzzy" and gave you the Antibiotics...which tells me that they either want to play it safe (maby the X-ray was inconclusive, b/c your daughter moved in the X-Ray...if she has a bacterial infection which Antibiotics will help with she is good to go..finish it,even if she is starting to feel better ina few days..if it is something viral then she will be OK neither way...sounds to me that their X-Ray reading was inconclusive and they wanted to play it safe and gave her some antibiotics. I would follow up with your pediatrician in a few days especially if your kiddo is not feeling any better.
Good Luck

Call the ER where you took your 3 yr. old and ask for the doctor who did the exam. Sometimes, they aren't "on" every night. If the doc who saw your child isn't on when you call, ask the person who answers the phone to give you a more detailed explanation of "a bit fuzzy." Someone there can help you out. They have a copy of the child's care, so there should be no problem.

Could mean anything from bronchitis to pneumonia. Watch her temp, keep her hydrated, use the antibotic...if in 2 days she is not way better head to the pediatrician or on to a pediatric pulmonologist. Go get a copy from the hospital of the doctor's notes and of the x-ray if you have to go to see a different doctor than you saw in the ER. The HIPPA papers entitle you to obtain any medical records about you or your child. Having them also makes it easier to avoid repeat and costly testing.

maybe the Xray wasn't a good one. Watch her and if her symptoms persist or become worse take her to the ER again. Also call her regular pediatrician to see what they say. A little fuzzy is specific and shouldn't be the basis for a diagnosis so if you are still concerned then see someone else....good luck and I hope your baby is better

My guess is it means some mucus in the lungs - which I have also heard doctors refer to as cloudy. Antiobiotics suggests a virus of some sort as those drugs don't work on bacteria based illnesses.

She probably has liquid in her lungs. The liquid would make her lungs appear "fuzzy" in the x-ray.

More than likely , he just meant she looked a bit congested. Docs and their "medical lingo".
