I have hsv1 already. Same thing as fever blisters. My girl friend has hsv 2, or genital herpes. I was just wondering since I kind of have the same virus, could I get both one, and two? I have never heard of that but I want to make sure. Any help would be great.

HSV-1 and HSV-2 are different viruses. You CAN get HSV-2 even if you already have HSV-1.

However, the reverse is not the case. Because your gf already has HSV-2, she cannot contract HSV-1. Weird, but true. The immune system is a fascinating thing.

The best way to avoid getting infected is for her to take suppressive therapy (daily valacyclovir) AND use condoms during all genital-to-genital contact (sexual intercourse, dry humping). An Italian study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2003 (I think -- it was fairly recent) showed that serodiscordant couples who used both drug therapy and condoms had a 90% rate of NOT infecting the partner. Good prevention right there!

Definitely! I have genital Herpes for 20 years +. If the person has an outbreak or is in the prior period (I forgot the name), when there's itching and you have oral sex, you can transmit the virus.
