Because it often causes upset stomach and having something light in your stomach prior to taking it will reduce the side effect considerably.

Niaspan can upset your stomach and when you take it with food, it lessens the chance that that will happen. Also, since Niaspan is a cholesterol lowering drug, you should also be on a low-fat and low-cholesterol diet, and so taking Niaspan with a low-fat snack, rather than a normal snack, is definitely a good idea.
